Dr. Abby :

Hello,

Dr. Abby :

Are you having any itching or pain?

Customer :

been having backaches and pain in both my legs. also pain in my right side very sharp at times

Dr. Abby :

Are you sexually active? Have you had a new partner recently?

Customer :

married and sexually active with my husband

Dr. Abby :

Ok, thank you....are you having any fever? Burning with urination?

Customer :

bad odor in my urine and yes burning sensation at times.

Dr. Abby :

Fishy odor at all?

Customer :

yes

Dr. Abby :

Thank you. The green discharge, as you probably have figured out, is indicative of a vaginal infection. A fishy odor is most commonly due to an infection called bacterial vaginosis. This is not an STD...it is due to an imbalance of the bacteria that are normally found in the vagina.

Dr. Abby :

Your doctor will do a vaginal exam and take samples of the discharge.

Dr. Abby :

She will then look under the microscope.

Dr. Abby :

If it looks like vaginosis, she will prescribe medication called Flagyl.

Dr. Abby :

Green discharge can also be a sign of an infection called trichomonas. This is an STD....however if you are in a monogamous relationship, this would be highly unlikely...

Dr. Abby :

Bacterial vaginosis would be the more likely cause.

Customer :

grenn discharge is not an indication of cancer?

Dr. Abby :

Have you had regular pap smears?

Customer :

not this year.

Dr. Abby :

But prior to this year?

Customer :

yes

Dr. Abby :

Cervical cancer takes years to develop. It does not develop in one year. Green discharge is a sign of infection.

Dr. Abby :

Cervical cancer more commonly will present with bleeding.

Customer :

thank you very much. have a great day

Dr. Abby :

You are very welcome. Feel free to ask any follow up questions you may have,

Dr Abby
