Hello, welcome to Justanswer, I will try to assist you with your medical question, and any medical information you seek
I work in orthopaedic surgery, and what you have is likely trigger thumb
So what are the symptoms and what can be done about it?
It is caused by inflammation and subsequent fibrosis of the tendon sheathe
have you tried splinting?
No, have only used ibuprofen. This happened suddenly one day when I woke up
First of all, you need to see a hand surgeon, to provide you with the correct treatment, and perhaps a splint. In cases that persist, a cortisone injection may be needed, and lastly , if nothing else works then surgery is a last resort
With anti-inflammatory medication, and a splint would this likely heal on its own? I have had carpal tunnel surgery on my hand 3 years ago.
I cannot say, every case if different, many improve with these conservative measures, while some require surgery
Steroid injections often provide a lot of relief
