Resolved Question:

My arm and hand is numb and tingling, what should I do? Does this relate to drinking 1.5 Liters of wine a day?

Hi there,

Thanks for your question.

This may or may not be related to daily wine drinking.

Wine or alcohol can cause toxic effects on the nerves ( tingling & numbness are nerve symptoms) directly or by causing vitamin deficiencies ( thiamine and vitamin B12).

Another possibility is nerve entrapment. If you have nerve impingement at your neck ( cervical spine), shoulder or wrist, you will get these symptoms.

You can consider quitting drinking & see if your symptoms improve.

Take vitamin supplements daily.

Try to rest your arm & hand as much as possible to promote nerve healing.

You should see your doctor for a clinical evaluation.

How long you have these symptoms?

If you have closing of throat, this may be an allergic reaction also.

If you have breathing difficulty, then you should go to the hospital for urgent care.

The arm numbness started about 6 hours ago and the closing throat feeling like an hour ago, but it's not too bad? Is drinking alcohol going to make this worse? Is arm numbness related to alcholism?
Expert:  Dr Basu replied 6 years ago.

You should better avoid alcohol for now.

The arm tingling and numbness will get better or is it a sign of something serious?
Expert:  Dr Basu replied 6 years ago.

These may be from anxiety or dehydration, since they started only 6 hours ago.

Drink plenty of fluids ( Gatorade) & relax.

They should get better over time.

It is very important you stay away from alcohol.

Take a multivitamin capsule daily.

Customer: replied 6 years ago.
Why will alcohol make it worse if it will eventually go away and how many hours or days does it take for it to go away?

Expert:  Dr Basu replied 6 years ago.

Alcohol causes nerve damage.

If you do not stop alcohol, it will not go away, but may get even worse.

If you stop alcohol, this should get better within a week or so.
