There are several different regimens for providing vitamin B12. Initially, when the vitamin B12 level is found to be low and needs to be built up, the vitamin B12 is provided more frequently, such as 100 mcg daily for the first week, then weekly for 5-6 weeks. After the vitamin B12 level has been built up, the usual maintenance dose of vitamin B12 is typically 100 mcg monthly. If it is desired to avoid shots, then high doses of oral vitamin B12 can be tried, such as 250 mcg daily, but it is important to follow levels to assure that this is adequate.
