Is this an idiopathic peripheral neuropathy ( in both feet with no obvious cause)?

yes. I had gastric bypass in 2003, but other than that they have no explanation.

I assume that vitamin deficiency has been excluded.

I am sorry to have to report that unless a specific cause can be found then it is not possible to stop the progression if the condition.
