Hello!

Yes, it would. Methadone is an opiate.

I hope this helps to clarify.

Best regards,

Anthony Bray MD

Actually, the standard 5 panel hair drug test panel does NOT detect methadone. These tests use GC/MS to detect the natural opiates (and metabolites) NOT methadone metabolites.

The following would be detected:
While it is scientifically possible to detect methadone in hair, I do not know of any standard panel that includes this in hair testing.

Quest Diagnostics is I believe the largest drug testing laboratory in the USA. Here is information on their hair testing

(On the FAQ it specifically identifies the drugs that are identified)

I used your service and received two completely different answers. Will methadone show up as an opiate on a 5 panel hair follicle test?
Expert:  Family Physician replied 6 years ago.
NO - the standard 5 panel test identifies the following opiates:
  • Codeine
  • Morphine
  • 6-acetyl morphine (a break down product of heroin)
FYI - I am a board certified medical review officer (MRO) with over 7 years experience in drug testing.

If you review the links I provided from Quest Diagnostics - the largest drug testing laboratory in the USA you will see the following under the FAQ

What drugs are tested with hair testing?
A Quest Diagnostics uses hair samples to test for the following drugs:
• Amphetamines (Amphetamine, Methamphetamine, MDMA and MDA)
• Opiates (Codeine, Morphine and 6-monoacetylmorphine)
• Cocaine (and cocaine metabolites)
• Marijuana metabolite (THC Carboxylic Acid metabolite)
• PCP

The 6-monoacetylmorphine is only found in individuals who have ingested heroin within the last 1-2 days. The only other 2 opiates identified are codeine and morphine. Methadone does NOT contain (or metabolize to) any of these substances.
