Well, the amount of time this type of drain is left in -- depends greatly on the type of drainagne and how much drainage is coming into the drain.

So if this was a complicated cholecystecomy (with bile leakage) or more bleeding than normal -- then this drain is placed.

And if there is very little drainage -- then it is pulled. If there is a lot of drainage, it is left in and the surgeon may analyze the fluid in the drain.

If the dressing around the drain site is dirty, then yes, it can be changed. Otherwise, changing the dressing periodically to ensure that the area is clean and dry is what is needed.
