dull pain on right side of the abdomin near base of the rib cage..to the back side of the right breast...the pain has been with me for years..on rare occassions it occurred when when I turned quickly..like a sharp muscle sprain..but never lasted..but through the years it was always there for a short time ..I never thought it a problem til now..now for no known reason it came and has persisted for about a week..sometimes more intense specially when I lay on my back...it usually is always ocassionally just there..this time it does not subside or go away..it is not specially trender to the touch..its just there and at times more intense...I take miralax for my diverticulosis and I thought it might be the gas that comes along with this medication...I do feel weak and slightly nauseous..I dont know if that is related or not..I take enalapril...iso..toprol and zocor for my heart and I thought it might be a reaction from these pills on my liver...
Have you had any of the imaging of the abdomen? Such as: Ultrasound of the right upper quadrant? CT abdomen? MRI abdomen? MRI thoracic / lumbar spine?
no...
OK. Is this a band like pain that radiates from your back around to your front? Or does it seem like a dull ache deep within the abdomen? Have you discussed this with your doctor?
in the abdomen...sometimes slightly to the back
Have you discussed this with your doctor? Have they done any bloodwork?
no..it was not a problem thru the years ubtil this past week...
OK.
Well, first, you probably should discuss this with your doctor.
There are many different causes for right upper abdominal pain, which need to be investigated.
Bloodwork (blood count, chemistries, liver function tests) and a physical exam are the first steps in the diagnosis.
Further imaging will depend on the physical exam and other blood tests.
potential causes:
Inflammation of the liver
gall bladder problems
right kidney issues
stomach or duodenal ulcers
right lower lung problems
thoracic spine problems
The fact that you have had the pain when you "turned quickly" could mean that this is more of a muscle strain / thoracic spine type of issue, but again, without an exam and bloodwork, it is hard to get the answer to this issue, because there are so many different possibilities.
