Response From Expert

Thanks for the post. I assume he is otherwise healthy and has never had anything like this before. Do these look like boils (see picture below)? Also why was he treated for strep throat (ie, what were his symptoms?)? Which antibiotic is he being treated with? Please get back to me and I will give you my thoughts. Thank you, XXXXX XXXXX

Customer Reply

hi, Thanks so much. The rash looks similar to the photo except that he does not have the prominent white spot. He was treated for strep because his sister was diagnosed (we were on vacation) with 'presumed ' strep throat. He came down with similar symptons, fever 102 for two days and lethargy. He is now taking Bactrim for 2 days. Thanks

Ok, thanks for the reply. Bactrim would actually not be my first choice for strep but it's actually very good for staph, which is what is likely causing the skin infection. It is likely based on the info you have provided that his fever was from the developing skin infection rather than anything in his throat.

However, you should know that even when the bacteria is sensitive to the antibiotic, sometimes the infection will still form boils (small abscesses) which require drainage to open them up. Therefore my recommendations are to continue the Bactrim as directed, use warm compresses to the area, wash your hands carefully, do not use his towels/sheets with other people in your family, and keep a close eye on the area. Should it develop hardness under the skin, become very red or painful, show red streaks up his arm, or his fever not get better in the next day or two, please see his pediatrician so he/she can make a decision about maybe changing the antibiotic or pursuing drainage of the area.

Hope this is helpful. Let me know if I can help in any other way. Best of luck to your son. Thank you, XXXXX XXXXX
