Not all polyps turn cancerous.
Only adenomatous polyps turn cancerous.
The chances are high only if it is more than 1 cm, found in patient older than 60 years, contains villous component ( microscopic finding).
It may take as many as 30 years or more of alcohol drinking before forming colon polyps. This is for hyperplastic polyps. For adenomatous polyps the risk is still low and nonsignificant.
It takes 15 years or more of smoking to get hyperplastic polyps and 25 years or more of smoking to get adenomatous polyps.
It takes 5-10 years for an adenomatous polyp to turn cancerous.
Hyperplastic polyps do not turn cancerous.
Just 5 months of heavy drinking does not cause colon polyps.
