My 1994 Miata will start up from the coldstart, and run two

Customer Question

My 1994 Miata will start up from the coldstart, and run for about two seconds then just die. No sputtering, and I just replaced the crank angle sensor to see if that was the issue but it was a no go

Hi there,

Was there any service or anything done to this prior to this happening?
Will the car start right back up after it stalls?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
No service done just prior, will not start up again after stalling from cold start
Expert:  Mike V. replied 11 months ago.

Ok

Try unplugging the mass air flow sensor and see if it will start and idle for you.

Please let me know.

Same result

Ok

Can check for spark or fuel when it won't start?

Possibly spray some carb cleaner into the throttle and crank it to see if it will fire

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Fuel and spark
Expert:  Mike V. replied 11 months ago.

can you feed it carb cleaner or starting fluid and keep it running?
Also, have you tried flashing any codes out of it?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Carb cleaner didn't work
Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Any other options before I have to go out and buy a code reader
Expert:  Mike V. replied 11 months ago.

Code reader isn't going to work on it, it's to old for OBDII.

If you have spark it should run on the carb cleaner...Makes no sense to be honest.

HERE is a link for flashing the codes using the check engine light.

See if there is anything stored.

Doesn't seem like you have spark if it won't run off the carb cleaner.

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
I pulled each one of the plug wires and made sure they had spark. Spark. No vroom.

What's the MIL
Customer: replied 11 months ago.
I've connected the ground and the ten already in case it was a timing issue
Expert:  Mike V. replied 11 months ago.

that's the check engine or service engine soon light.

Once it starts flashing you should see long and short flashes. Try to put this together to come up with a code.

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
No check engine light at all
Expert:  Mike V. replied 11 months ago.

Are you saying when you turn the key on there isn't a check engine light coming on?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Correct
Expert:  Mike V. replied 11 months ago.

Well, if the light isn't even coming on for the first three seconds with the key on, we will never be able to get the codes if there are any.

Can you do a compression test on this?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
I don't have a compression tester, but if it starts up on all cylinders and run smooth for two seconds, it wouldn't have to do with compression right?
Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Also the check engine light Will flash once when I put the key in, as normal
Expert:  Mike V. replied 11 months ago.

Seems like it would not be the problem. But you are pretty much ruling out fuel as the problem because it won't run off the carb cleaner. This would mean fuel and spark isn't the issue. All that is required is fuel, compression and spark. Something is going away and must be staying away to prevent the car from running.

Does the car have a remote start or aftermarket starter on it?
So, the light does come on. Make sure your jumper is secure in the correct to slots. Even if there isn't any codes that light should be flashing when you turn the key on with the jumper in the 2 terminals.

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
No it's essentially stock, no aftermarket anything except for springs and shocks
Expert:  Mike V. replied 11 months ago.

You need to double check your jumper when you are putting it in the terminals. It should blink even with no codes. You got something going on there.

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Big fat I insulated metal paper clip showed in at ground and Ten, no light
Customer: replied 11 months ago.
uninsulated
Expert:  Mike V. replied 11 months ago.

Sorry, I guess I am not going to be able to help you with this. I will open it up for the other experts.

Please don't reply to me or it will lock it back to me and they won't be able to see it to help out
