my mazda protege falls on its face when accelerating from a start. i am also seeing that the vacuum line from the brake booster to the intake plenum is or seems to be colapsed.

The brake booster vacuum hose will need to be replaced.

The hesitation could be quite a few things ranging from the throttle position sensor, an inaccurate MAP or MAF signal, low fuel pressure, ignition issues, an exhaust restriction or fuel quality issue.

The first step in diagnosing the problem is to see if any fault codes have set. Have you checked for fault codes?
