The best way to diagnose a head gasket failure is with a chemical tester. This tester will look for combustion gasses in the coolant which means the head gasket is bad. Most parts stores will lend you (with a deposit) the tester if you purchase the test fluid from them. Every brand is different but they work pretty much the same. You put the device on the radiator and fill it with test fluid. You then run the engine and the fluid turns colors if exhaust gasses are present.

Here is an example of one on amazon.
