If the vehicle surges while driving but will idle normally, then you will need to check the following.

You may also want to try a module reset. Disconnect the battery. Hold your foot on the brake pedal for 1 min. Clean and reconnect the battery cables. With the engine running, make sure battery voltage is 13-15 volts. Make sure the battery will pass a load test.

With the engine running, listen for any vacuum leaks.

You may have water or old gas causing the concern.

You may want to replace the fuel filter.

Inspect the air filter and air intake hose for holes, restrictions. Inspect for rodent damage.

Try cleaning the MAF with throttle body cleaner.

Check to see if there are any fault codes stored in the computer.

If the surge feels like a misfire, I suggest replacing spark plugs and wires.
