Customer Question

I am concerned that my oil pump is failing. I am getting a lot of what sounds like loud lifter noise. For a long time, it would tap a little bit and then shut up, but now it taps constantly.

Country: United States
Make: Mazda
Model: Miata
Year: 1997

Already Tried:
Made sure it has oil. The noise just started on my way home. The car is still full of oil.

Welcome to Just Answer. My name is XXXXX XXXXX X will be glad to assist you.

Here is a test to measure your valve lash. If all good, you will need to install a oil pressure gauge and test for normal oil pressure. If oil pressure is low, you will need to replace the pump. Since you didn't say that your oil light is on or flickering, I suspect that the oil pump is good.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions by hitting the reply button.

Thanks
Drew

  1. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  2. Measure valve clearance and check to see if it is over 0.15 mm (0.0059 inch) max.
  3. If valve clearance is more than 0.15 mm (0.0059 inch) , replace Hydraulic Lash Adjuster [Lifter, Valve] (HLA) .

The answer that was provided did not solve my problem, but it did help narrow the scope of my research so I could find a solution. The problem with the lifter noise was ultimately resolved by changing from a 5w30 part synthetic oil to a 10w30 full synthetic oil.

Great job and thanks for the accept.

Sounds like a band aid to me. The concern may still come back in the future and then you will need to inspect the lifters.

Don't disagree that at some point I will need to do additional work on this motor. it has approximately 324000 miles on it. thank you for your assistance.
