check engine light came on in 2008 mazda 3 with 62k miles. how quickly do i need to get it into the shop? Car is 40 miles away from my mechanic. is it safe to drive to my mechanic or does it need to be fixed before driving?

No...I am getting this info 2nd hand from daughter driving the car...all she said she was told was "it said gross leak"
OK, that sounds like part of the evaporative emission system and may be that the gas cap was left loose. You can check the cap but it will do no harm or cause any drivability issues to operate it with the light on and this code set.
As long as the light is not flashing and the engine seems to run normally it is safe to run the vehicle until you can get the problem diagnosed and repaired.
