I just purchased a 2004 rx-8 with auto tranny. The dealer said the car needed the transmission computer replaced and it cost 450 dollars. The car runs ok , but severely lacks power since it doesn't always start in first. When driving it back, I think it was stuck in third cause my rpms were pretty high for 60 MPH. The manual mode is not responsive. Shifts pretty hard into gear sometimes, especially reverse. My question is - is the tranny computer really a separate replaceable module? Would it cause these symptoms? I hope you can help.Benjamin

Hello Benjamin
Yes the transmission control module (TCM) is separate and can be replaced. I will cause shifting concerns that you speak of. If the engine has low power output, I suspect the engine may be expired. This engine has a 8yr 100k mile warranty extension but most 2004 model are out by time now. The engine lack of power and hard start is a very common concern of a low compression failed engine. If no fault codes are stored in the computer that show engine is misfiring, then I would try a engine de-carbon procedure to see if engine can re-gain compression.
