2004 Mazda Tribute: The Air bag light flash 4 times..stays

I have a 2004 Mazda Tribute. The Air bag light flash 4 times the pauses and flashes 4 more times. After several time it stays on. What could cause this?

There is no light flash code #4 for the tribute. To be sure of the fault code #, I would have the codes checked with a code reader that reads body codes.

2001-2004 Tribute vehicles equipped with side air bag option


Some 2001-2004 Tribute vehicles may exhibit an air bag warning lamp illuminating intermittently with DTCs B1994 (driver side, side mount air bag circuit open) and/or B1998 (passenger side, side mount air bag circuit open).

This condition may be caused by a variation in the electrical continuity at connector S367 (driver side) or S337 (passenger side) at the body harness wire terminal crimp.

A replacement Side Air Bag (SAB) Terminal Repair Kit is available to repair this concern. Refer to the instruction sheet included in the SAB Terminal Repair Kit.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicles repaired using the following procedure.


Install a SAB Terminal Repair Kit for each affected side air bag harness connector.


^This service bulletin adds supplementary explanation to the instructions enclosed in the service repair kit parts package.


^This repair procedure is specifically for this Service Bulletin only.


^The soldering must be performed by skilled technicians who are appointed by the dealer service manager.


Before performing this repair, review all Workshop Manual safety WARNINGS and NOTES related to diagnosis and repair of the supplemental restraint system (SRS), including those discussed below. If DTCs other than those noted above are observed, consult the Workshop Manual for diagnostic procedures.

1.Confirm the codes using WDS.


2.Record all radio station presets so you can re-program customer preferences after repairs are completed.



^The side air bag and pretensioner are pyrotechnic devices. Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag equipped vehicle and when working on side air bag and pretensioner systems. Never probe a side air bag electrical connector. Doing so could result in side air bag and pretensioner deployment and could result in personal injury.


^To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be carefully depleted using Steps 3 - 5 before performing the repairs described in this Service Bulletin.


3.Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and remove key.


4.At the Central Junction Box (CJB), located below the left side of the instrument panel, remove the cover and the Restraints Control Module (RCM) fuses # ) 5 (5A) and # ) 7 (10A) from the CJB. For additional information, refer to the appropriate model year Workshop Manual and Wiring Diagram.


5.Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).


WARNING :To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any supplemental restraint system (SRS) components.


6.Follow the instructions included with the SAB Terminal Repair Kit.


CAUTION :Carefully refer to the "Service Point for Wire Soldering" and DO NOT allow bad soldering.


7.Turn the ignition switch from OFF to ON.


8.Install the RCM fuses # ) 5 (5A) and # ) 7 (10A) to the CIB and install the cover.


WARNING :Be sure that there are no occupants in the vehicle and that there are no objects blocking or sitting in front of any air bag module when the battery negative cable is re-connected. Failure to follow this procedure can result in injury or death.


9.Reconnect the negative battery cable.


10.If any further problems are noted, perform additional diagnosis after first repeating the power depletion process addressed in Steps 3 - 5 above.


11.Re-program the recorded preset radio stations.


12.Clear and reset all codes and confirm the repair.


13.Road test the vehicle to relearn KAM (Keep Alive Memory) strategy and verify no DTCs are present.
