My '06 Miata MV-5 with 60,000 miles on it suddenly showed the check engine icon, but there are no operating problems; it continues to run beautifully as it has since I bought it this past summer. I don't have a manual, so am wondering what the check engine light might mean.

Did this happen after refueling?
No, I didn't refuel, nor did I drive any differently ...I was only 7 miles from home
Ok was there any recent work done?
No. I bought the car from a dealer 150 miles away and haven't had to have anything done to it since. It runs beautifully, with nothing that would lead to the check engine light coming on -- that I know of.
Ok could just be a temporary code .Try This disconnect the battery for 5 minutes then reconnect the battery this will clear the code if it comes back then there is a hard fault and you can go to any auto zone or advanced auto and they will scan the code for free and then you can pinpoint the issue . These are the next steps . Hoped this helped . Positive feedback and bonuses greatly appreciated .
Thanks for your prompt reply! I'll follow your advice tomorrow. I appreciate your clear instructions and good advice. I wasn't aware of this procedure or that I can take the car to Auto Zone or Advanced Auto for a free code scan.
No problem positive feedback and bonuses greatly appreciated.
Just to be sure, what are the steps to disconnect & reconnect the battery?
Key off and out of the ignition . Disconnect positive battery terminal first then negative terminal . Leave disconnected for 5 minutes then reconnect the battery. Hoped this helped. Positive feedback and bonuses greatly appreciated.
