Let x be the number of hours Murphy family's sprinkler was used and y be the number of hours Rodriguez family's sprinkler was used.

The system of equations will be

x + y = 50---------------(i)

30x + 25y = 1400---------(ii)

from equation (i)

y = 50-x

substitute value of y in equation (ii)

30x + 25(50-x) = 1400

30x + 1250 - 25x = 1400

5x + 1250 = 1400

5x = 1400-1250

5x = 150

divide by 5

x = 150/5 = 30 hours

Now, y = 50-x = 50-30 = 20 hours

Number of hours Murphy family's sprinkler used = x = 30 hours

Number of hours Rodriguez family's sprinkler used = y = 20 hours
