1. A set of data contains 53 observations. The lowest value is 42 and the largest is 129. The data are to be organized into a frequency distribution.
(a) How many classes would you suggest?
(b) What would you suggest as the lower limit of the first class?

First I will mention that there are not unique answers for your questions. The number of classes is generally set between 5 and 20. Since 53 observations are relatively small, I would set the number of classes to be a relatively small number, such as 7. This will yield an average of approximately 8 observations per class.
I would set the lower limit of the first class at 40.
(a) 7
(b) 40
