From x to x+h. Sorry I forgot to put this in.

Ok, no problem!

The formula is:

(f(b)-f(a))/(b-a)

Plugging in those values:

(f(x+h)-f(x))/(x+h-x)

= (f(x+h)-f(x))/h

= ((x+h)^2 - 4(x+h) - 5 - (x^2 - 4x - 5))/h

Simplify:

= (x^2 + 2xh + h^2 - 4x -4h - 5 - x^2 + 4x + 5)/h

Combine like terms:

= (2xh + h^2 -4h)/h

Divide through by the h:

= 2x + h - 4
