JA: What's the make/model of your GPS unit? How old is it?
Customer: 547xS installed 1.5 yrs ago
JA: What happened right before this popped up?
Customer: Normal operations , looked at plotter, then started engine, went dead
JA: What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: Reconnect several times, cycled power, rest of systems all ok. Tried it on land, it now powers up and then drops off repeatedly
JA: Anything else you want the GPS expert to know before I connect you?

Hello, my name is***** will assist you.

The things that you can check are the power supply to the unit and the connections on the back of the unit along with the fuse. Make sure that the unit is getting at least 10V DC to the plug on the power cord using a multimeter. If it is not, check the connections to the boats power supply and the battery to make sure that they are clean and tight. If all connections are good and you are getting at least 10V to the unit, you would need to contact Gramin at http://www.garmin.com/support. to schedule a return of the unit for repair.

The Garmin site refers to some sort of reboot using an SD card, are you familiar with this process?
