I have a Lowrance Elite 5x DSI, purchased & installed in Nov.,2011. When I turn
on the power button, it lights the display briefly, then goes very dark so I can
barely see anything on the screen. Don't know how to get display to work so
screen lights up like it should. Can you help me?

Hello, my name is***** will assist you.

Have you tried to adjust the backlight?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
I am unable to do so, as the backlight only stays on bright enough for a brief second or two when I first turn the fishfinder on, then it goes almost dark. thus, I cannot see the screen
bright enough to scroll thru menu to adjust settings.

After you power up the unit, press and release the power button, this will open the backlight menu. Increase the level to see if you can see the screen then.

I have tried this several times and always get the same result. The screen on the
unit lights up briefly and then goes so dark I am unable to read the screen to work any
of the options on the menu. I am not at my dock right now, but will be Monday aftn.
Do you think it would make any difference if I disconnected the power at the battery
terminal, then re-connected. (maybe this would reset something?)

When you get back to the boat, take a multimeter with you. Test the power to the units plug, and test the voltage at the battery. Make sure that the unit is getting supplied with the correct voltage. If it is low, check the connections and make sure that they are tight and clean.

OK, I will try this and then text you back when I am at my boat, using my smartphone.
(don't have internet /computer at my lake apt.)

Sounds good. Next week I may not be online much, I am having surgery on Monday.

I used the meter at my boat and the Lowrance FF was getting 12V, so that's not the problem. Doesn't sound like you can help me or answer my problem?

Have you tried to do a factory reset on the unit?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Not possible to do a factory reset, cause screek does not stay on/lit up long enough.

Just stopped for lunch at McDonald's. Will be back on the road til 6pm.

With the unit off, press and hold the + and - keys. Then press and release the power button. Release al keys when the map of he USA appears. This is the hard reset.

Charles- I have been out of town to visit my sick niece in Wisc. and
to Illinois to see our newest grandchild. I am going to the lake this
weekend and will try the "hard reset" that you suggested and get
back to you after I try that. Thanks. Ron

No worries. There are no time limits here. Test when you are ready.
