Customer Question

I just bought a 40' Carver 400, weight 25000 lbs. It has the Garmin 7212 chartplotter/GPS/Radar/Depth system but no auto-pilot.
I want an auto pilot but the best price I can get on the Garmin unit with pump is $5600 installed ($4000) parts.
Is there a cheaper way? I cannot spend that much now but seem to think there should be alternatives. HELP

Hi there,

$4000 is about average for a decent AutoPilot system for a 40' vessel.

You could perhaps negotiate on the labor costs for fitting - I would expect around $1000 should be enough.

You could get cheaper by fitting a used system, however they are usually removed and sold for a reason, so you really are better off investing in a new one with full manufacturer's warranty.
