I have a Simrad CE32 plotter/ sounder unit that has frozen up and will not clear and restart. I also have a Simrad EQ32 sounder unit (color) which is of similar vintage, new condition (used for 2 months about 8-10 years ago) and is basically the same unit (w/o the plotter) as the CE32. I am hoping to replace the CE32 with the EQ32 until I can research current options and replace with new. Two questions: 1) can the EQ32 operate with the existing (CE32) transducer? 2) should the EQ32 start right up or will the internal battery need to be replaced after sitting for 8-10 years? Thank you for your asistance- Gary MesserAny recommendations for a new plotter/ sounder? The sounder is very important as I target bottom fish (and prawning) off Vancouver Island (100- 400 feet)
Hello. The EQ32 should work with that unit. However, there is a good chance that the internal battery would be depleted after that long in storage, and it may not be worthwhile or even possible to replace it. I have to tell you that sounders have improved orders of magnitude in the intervening years, so you would probably be well served to simply replace your unit with new technology. I have been particularly impressed with the Humminbird plotter/sounder - I have the SI (side imaging) system and it is fantastic - the images from the bottom are almost picture quality, although the depth range you mentioned may be too deep to make the SI feature useful. Any of the major brands will do an amazing job; I would go to a marine electronics dealer or larger store and look at them in demo mode - the screen would be the determining feature for me.
