I tried to install the update today and it just got stuck

Customer Question

I tried to install the update today and it just got stuck and did nothing for over an hour. I call US cellular and they had be power down the phone and then turn it back on. Every time I do, I get the ITunes symbol on the screen with the white plug in on it.
JA: How much experience do you have with this particular machine?
Customer: I've had my Iphone for about 2 years but don't use the itunes
JA: Have you installed any updates recently?
Customer: That's what I was trying to do
JA: What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: nothing really, it won't do anything else
JA: Anything else you want the Mac expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: I guess not

Hi,

I'm sorry about the issue. It looks like the software update was corrupted. To resolve this issue, the iPhone must be connected to the computer. Please download / install the iTunes program at the Apple website below:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

- Then open the iTunes program on the computer, then connect the iPhone to the computer. Then use the iTunes program to fix / restore the iPhone.

If needed, here is another way:

  1. Connect the iPhone to your computer with the USB Cable.
  2. Open iTunes program on a Windows or Mac computer. If needed, on your computer, you can download / install the latest iTunes software at the Apple website below first:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
  3. On the iPhone, press and hold the Home button and the Power button at the same time.
  4. After 10 or 11 seconds release the Power button, but continue holding the Home button (for about another 10 seconds) until the iTunes program shows that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.
  5. Click Restore and confirm / continue.
