I just did an update and now it cannot get past the screen with the apple logo and the loading bar
JA: What OS X (Operating System, e.g. Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, etc.) or iOS are you runninng?
Customer: Sierra on an iMac
JA: Have you installed any updates recently?
Customer: yes, an update installed this morning
JA: What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: I did a hard restart, I just tried booting in safe mode and am waiting for some kind of result

Try these steps please.

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Find Command (⌘), Option, P, and R on your keyboard.
  3. Turn on your Mac.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys immediately after you hear the startup sound.
  5. Hold these keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for a second time.
  6. Release the keys.
