i have a loud message telling me I have a virus and to call them. Or else my hard drive will be erased. A scam, but what do I do??
JA: What OS X (Operating System, e.g. Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, etc.) or iOS are you runninng?
Customer: I think its 10 lion or something.
JA: Have you installed any updates recently?
Customer: about a year ago
JA: What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: none
JA: Anything else you want the Mac expert to know before I connect you?

I'm sorry about the issue. That is certainly a scam; it is a fake message. Yes, can you please shut down / restart the computer, and check?

- If there is still any issue, does this issue occur when you turn on the computer or when you open the Internet (Safari application), or a particular application?

If needed, please also try the following fix:

  1. Force quit the Safari application by clicking on the Apple logo / menu, then click on the option Force Quit
    ; (or press at the same time the 3 keys Command-Option-Esc on the keyboard)
  2. Then select the item Safari, then click on Force Quit button at the bottom, then click on Force Quit to confirm.
    ; (Note: If it does not let you force quit the Safari application, then just shut down / restart the computer)
  3. Then press and keep holding the Shift key on the keyboard, and open Safari application.
  4. Once Safari application is open, then release the Shift key.
    - Then your computer / internet should work fine now.
