JA: What OS X (Operating System, e.g. Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, etc.) or iOS are you runninng?
Customer: Really????? It is an iPad Air
JA: Have you installed any updates recently?
Customer: Just started to use it -- was charging it and tried to get in. Wouldn't accept my e-mail address said I needed an apple account. Went through those steps and still didn't work. I have now created a new e-mail address. Birthdate:1/5/52 --get the picture?
JA: What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: Restarting Ipad and used a different e-mail account
JA: Anything else you want the Mac expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: All of this is a giant leap for this baby boomer.

there should be one that comes up on the activation screen. If it doesn't we can restore it.

that is only an additional service option. We can't use it in this case.

Follow these steps when you have the iPad with you.

1. Connect iPad to your computer.

2. Select iPad in the iTunes sidebar, then click the Summary tab.

3. Click “Check for Update.” iTunes tells you if there’s a newer version of the iPad software available.

4. Click Restore. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the restore process. When restoring, it is recommended that you back up iPad when prompted. When the iPad software has been restored, you can choose to set up iPad as a new iPad, or restore your music, videos, app data, and other content from a backup.
