JA: What OS X (Operating System, e.g. Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, etc.) or iOS are you runninng?
Customer: I haven't saved in a while and I don't want to force quit yet
JA: Have you installed any updates recently?
Customer: El captain
JA: What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: nothing really
JA: Anything else you want the Mac expert to know before I connect you?

Since it's frozen, there is nothing you can do. If the Auto Recover or Auto Save is turned on already, the contents of the document should be saved on a temp file.

Either wait or Force Quit word and open it again.

Word will automatically opens the document.

If word didn't open and you cannot see the document then go to Macintosh HD/Users/[username]/Documents/Microsoft Userdata/Office 200x_ AutoRecovery/ folder
Look through all documents in that folder for your previous version/document.

These are the options we are left with at this time.
