My son's ipad's screen is black. I can hear the voices

Hi! My son's ipad's screen is black. I can hear the voices commands however I can't get the black screen to go away, I have held the home and on/off button - I see and apple, I keep holding, then black again. I don't know what is going on
JA: What OS X (Operating System, e.g. Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, etc.) or iOS are you runninng?
Customer: It is an iOS however I don't know which one because I cant see the screen. It is linked to me so would I look for devices on my computer? Although I did forget how to do this
JA: Have you installed any updates recently?
Customer: I don't know, It has been given to my son - he has the ipad mini
JA: What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: I have held down the home and on/off until see I see an apple and continue holding for another minute so I cant see it anymore and wait for a restart button appears but it doesnt
JA: Anything else you want the Mac expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: No, i just need to get this black screen off

Sorry to hear about your issue :(
Since you have already tried a reset, the next step we can try is a restore.
Open iTunes in the computer and connect the iPad to the computer. Now, on the iPad press and hold the power and home button for about 10-30 sec. Your computer should now give a message that it had detected an iPad in recovery mode and needs to be restored. Restore the iPad now.
