Which version of Mac operating system does it say in About This Mac. Which Mac is it?

You can run this tool to check hardware specs and more:

Or AHT (Apple Hardware Test)

Had you got any other FireWire devices that still work?
Has this FireWire device worked in the past on this Mac, and can you check it on a different Mac?

Firewire used to work, I had stored the audio device for the last 2 years- re setting up and had this failure
Expert:  David replied 3 months ago.

Is it a firewire 800 or 400 device, and are you using any adapters?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
I am running the 9 PIN to 6 Pin cable FW800.

Is your Mac running the latest version of Yosemite?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
No I am running Maverick- to stay compatible with my ProTools software
Expert:  David replied 3 months ago.

The device might have failed if System Profiler doesn't show anything after resetting SMC and PRAM.

There is no other connection type on the device?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
I have to go from the six pin out of my board to the Mac can I come into a USB?
Expert:  David replied 3 months ago.

This might work, depending on the firmware in the board and signals between the device and the Mac:

The FireWire hardware could be working fine, but you could only know if you knew this device worked Ok on another Mac, or another Firewire device worked ok on this Mac.

The OS needs to be up to date, but there's no way to check if you can't upgrade past Mavericks. That's unlikely though.

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Ok, doesn't seem like this is going to happen today - I have to go to work.
Expert:  David replied 3 months ago.

Right, Ok. You have the link to Etrecheck which should diagnose the FireWire hardware health, also the link to the USB adapter to try. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Please take a moment to rate my advise.

Have a good day!
