Open iTunes on your computer. Connect USB cable to your computer but not to the iPad. While pressing and holding the Home button down (the round button in the center), connect the USB cable to the iPad. Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen. When this screen appears, you can release the Home button. iTunes will detect iPad and will give you the option to restore it. If you don't have a backup, and you do the restore (it will be a clean install) with all previous data wiped.

You need to put it back in recovery mode, and set it up again. Connect your device to your computer and open iTunes. While your device is connected, Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for at least 10 seconds, and don't release when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen. When you see the option to Restore or Update, choose Update. Please try this and let me know the results.

Please reboot your computer. then, force restart your iPad, To force restart your device, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo. Then, try updating it again via iTunes.

When you got to the screen with itunes/cable and you plugged it in to your Mac did you try the Restore in iTunes I am unclear on that?

Then I need to force start it again and back to square one
