Customer Question

I had to restore iTunes from my Time Machine backup. My library was restored, but none of my playlists or podcast subscriptions. How do I get them back?

Hi,

can you tell me which file you restored from Time Machine?

Thanks,

John

The entire iTunes folder

Thanks.

If you restored the entire iTunes folder in ~/Music/iTunes then it actually should have restored all playlists, as well.

What was the problem you were having that necessitated a restore?

I moved the folder to my DropBox to transfer it to my new laptop, and my ancient MacBook froze up during the process. The folder was gone from my Mac, but not fully transferred to my DropBox. In hindsight, I probably should have made a copy of the folder instead of dragging and dropping the original per the instructions on the Apple website, but I was following directions :-(

Ok. :-(

Was the old MacBook running a much older release of iTunes?

It is version 12.2.2.25

Is there a particular file in the iTunes folder that contains the playlists and podcasts?
Expert:  John T. F. replied 8 months ago.

Ok, that's fairly recent.

As I mentioned, restoring from Time Machine should have restored all playlists, as well.

I would recommend going back and restoring a slightly older copy of the iTunes folder.

The playlist info is sort of spread among the files you see in the folder. iTunes Library.itl is the main file, however.

I just started another restore with a backup from a month ago. It will take about 2 hours. Can I touch base with you again when it is done?
Expert:  John T. F. replied 8 months ago.

Sure thing. Just reply back when you are ready.
