As the first step Lois, attempt to reset your Apple ID password ***** my link below and then use this new password ***** sign in.
Can you do this and if you can get it reset, then use the new password ***** the iPad.

ok, if your not able to reset the password, then your going to have to reset the iPad and use a new Apple ID.
It will mean you will reset the iPad to new again so you will have to install all your Apps, and I urge you to first backup your data first.
Then to do the reset go to Settings, General, Reset, Erase all content and reset settings.
Once done, choose the option to setup the iPad as new and you can then again create a new Apple ID to use on the iPad with a new password.
