In settings I can't get the various SOUNDS to work. They appear OK when checking them but will not work as a function eg when I receive an email there is now no sound

First make sure you don't have the mute switch turned on. If it is, then turn it off. It is above the volume up/down buttons.

If that didn't work, then press and hold down the Power button and Home button at the same time until it shows the Apple logo. When you see the Apple logo, release the buttons and let it boot.

What version of iOS are you using on ? iOS 7,8, 9 etc
