It is now asking for a pword when I switch it on

There isn't a way to bypass the code without a factory reset. There are 3 ways to reset your phone; iTunes, Find my iPhone, recovery mode. Take a look here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204306 Scroll down to Erase and Restore and follow the steps for the reset.
