I'm sorry about the issue. Can you please confirm you are able to use your gmail password XXXXX the website http://www.gmail.com?

Can you please go to your google/gmail account security settings:
https://security.google.com/settings/security?pli=1
, and check if the 2-step verification option is enabled, then you would need to create an application-specific password XXXXX

Or you can just try this easier method: don't use the Mail app on the iPad, but go to the App Store, then search for Gmail then download and install the Gmail app, then use the Gmail app for your gmail email.
