My iPad wont charge. Shows the battery with one tiny red bar,

My iPad wont charge. Shows the battery with one tiny red bar, then the white apple, then dark, and keeps repeating this cycle, but won't charge. I have tried to catch it at the right time and shut down completely, but can't seem to get it to turn off totally so it will charge. Please help. Thank You!

Are the items on your iPad backed up to your computer or iCloud?

some of it i believe, my ipad keeps saying not enough room on icloud, and yet much of what I do shows up on phone and computer

Ok thats good. It means you do have a backup, but you may have accumulated additional data that was not backed up due to limited space. It sounds like your iPad needs to be restored which does wipe off your data.

Michelle :

We can try to turn it off and keep it charging for 5 mins before we result to the restore

:) Ok lets start with that. Press and hold the power button at the upper right corner until the ipad displays slide to power off. Then power it off

I held down home button for a long time, and the plug in icon got long and has an arrow at top pointing to itunes Icon on screen

You held down the home button and not the Power button

i am :-) just because it is different and gives me hope

I know it will give you hope, but holding now the home button places your iPad into recovery mode. Now you will have to restore your iPad :( But it will be up and running again, you may not have the most current backup

Do you have an iphone that is backing up to iCloud?

Customer:

Ok good, you can actually restore the backup from your iPhone onto your iPad :)

Michelle :

Next, you will need to connect your iPad into your computer and open itunes

Michelle :

Let me know when your iPad is connected to your computer

it says i must restore this ipad before it can be used with itunes

Yes that is correct, you will need to press restore

itunes has detected an ipad in recovery mode. ok one sec

If done correctly, there should be an apple logo with a progress bar underneath

uh oh, something happened. ipad is black, itunes says lost connection, and now I can't do anything.

Since you received an error message, lets update your iTunes and then place ipad into recovery mode again. While itunes is updating..Yes connect your iPad into an outlet charger

mac, it is trying again. I have a feeling my internet connection was not great. it hopefully is going well now

Can you click on the apple logo in the upper left corner and choose software updates. What updates are available.

Oh thats fine. Thats is because this chat is open so that is normal. At least its bookmarked! Now lets reset your computers PRAM. This helps handle USB connectivity issues

1.Shut down the computer.


2.Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.


3.Turn on the computer.


4.Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears. Let computer chime 4 times


5.Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound four time.s


6.Release the keys.

That will be the last option of it fails again. The itunes icon will always remain on the screen until the ipad restores successfully. The connect to itunes logo is just an indication that your iPad is still in recovery mode

Yes, this way you will still be logged in. Switch over to the test account (It will have a cube switching effect) open itunes from there and attempt to restore. Then Click on test and choose your account name to switch back

No your not, you just need to make that trip to the apple store. Since your cable is not cooperating with you. Unless someone closer can allow you to borrow a cable

Before you go, do you want to try to put it into DFU mode

Its similar to recovery mode but it said to have better success

i can't seem to power it off! I have tried and tried. any secrets?

because if I could power it off it would recharge

It should go off it your press the button in the upper right corner for 40 secs

Wait.. All this time it never charged :(

hmmm did it for 50 removed my finger, red battery came up not itunes logo. going to totally disconnect and try again

Michelle :

Disconnect it completely then press and hold the power button (Button in upper right corner)

that was my first clue this am, that I couldn't get it to shutdown completely so that I could charge. I just held the little button for more than 40 seconds. so far nothing on screen. terrified to touch anything on it now

Ok now plug it into the wall outlet

red battery came on then apple icon then itunes, rats

almost immediately

lets try DFU mode any ways. Connect it back to your computer and then press the power button until the screen goes black

tried a different cord, and apple logo then itunes came up, no red battery

plugged last cord into computer, screen is staying black

Next, Hold down the sleep/power button and home button together for exactly 10 seconds, then release the power button


Continue to hold down the Home button until a message appears in iTunes telling you an iPhone in recover mode has been detected

Hi Michelle, well happy unbirthday to me. I had to replace my 18 month old ipad due to a interior connection problem. Apple got the restore done, and iCloud, but then it kept going off and wouldn't charge. Oh well, and the beat goes on.


Hope you are having a wonderful weekend. I am going to try and enjoy the rest of it :-) And thank you again. You were right, it was a connection problem, but when none of my cords would work, i figured it had to be in the ipad itself. Vicki
