Im using an Eudrora 6.2.4,

Resolved Question:

I'm using an Eudrora 6.2.4, an iMac computer, OS10.6.8, and a Safari browser. Yesterday I attempted to download email but the download hung up on one message. After waiting about 30 minutes I did a Command/escape order so as to close down Eudora. Since then, whenever I try to access Eudora I get a "Eudora Quit Unexpectedly" panel.

Is there any way that I can bring Eudora back to life? I can transmit the long error message that's "sent to Apple" automatically if that would help.

Hello,
I am Pete, and I'll be happy to assist with your question today.

Try starting up your iMac in "Safe Mode", then try starting Eudora again and remove the problem email.

To start up into Safe Mode, do this:

1. Shut down your iMac.
2. Press the power button.
3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (spinning gear).

Let me know if that helps.

Pete,

Thanks for the suggestion to shut down my iMac, start up in the "Safe Mode, and then access Eudora. I tried that twice but it didn't work. When I use Command/M I still get the "Eudora quit unexpectedly" panel. I've made a copy of the error report after the two tries to implement your suggestion. I could send it to you as an attachment if you give me your email address.

Expert:  Pete replied 10 months ago.

Hi Richard,

You should be able to attach the report here (do you see a paperclip icon on your text box toolbar?) If not, you can email it to experts@justanswer.com along with a link to this question and request that it be forwarded to me.

Thanks,

Pete.

Customer: replied 10 months ago.

About an hour ago I sent the report as an attachment to a message titled "Here's the Report" to "Pete on JustAnswer <XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX>. I now see the paperclip icon so I'll try to send the report again. On second thought that icon seems to be for the purpose of sending an image.

If you can't find my previous message with the report attached, please let me know and I'll try again.[

Expert:  Pete replied 10 months ago.
Hi, the email hasn't been forwarded to me yet, so please try the paper clip icon - it works for documents as well as images.
Customer: replied 10 months ago.

The paper-clip icon doesn't work for me so I'll just copy the report here:

! Eudora Quit Unexpectedly

Click Reopen to open the application again. This report will be sent to Apple automatically.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for sending the report.

So something is happening to cause Eudora to quit unexpectedly...

To find out what is causing this, try the following:

LaunchFinder and navigate to the Spool folder in the Eudora DATA directory. If there are any files in Spool folder or any of its sub folders with an .RCV extension, move them out of the spool folder and into a New empty folder. Now try and launch Eudora. If this resolves the issue, one or more of the messages contained in one or more of those .RCV files is causing the crash. Quit Eudora and put half of the .RCV files back into the Spool Folder and restart Eudora. If Eudora does not crash, repeat this with half of the remaining files. If Eudora does crash, Quit Eudora and pull half of the .RCV files you placed into the Spool Folder, back out again and restart Eudora. Continue these steps until you locate the offending message(s).

Pete,

Thanks for your suggestion of Monday, September 02, 2013 6:27 PM EST.

I found the Spool Folder at Finder/Documents/EudoraFolder/SpoolFolder

At SpoolFolder there were about 85 Folders each with a 10-digit number, none with .RCV extension.

I laboriously opened each of these folders and found no items within them with .RCV extensions. Many had extensions ,jpg, .doc, or .jpg.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Expert:  Pete replied 10 months ago.

Hi Richard,

Try temporarily removing ALL contents of the SpoolFolder, then try starting Eudora again. If that doesn't help, you can move the contents back in to the folder again.

Customer: replied 10 months ago.

Pete,

Thanks for your suggestion of 03 September 2013 1:24 AM EST. I removed ALL contents from the Spool Folder, and then tried to start Eudora. Unfortunately Eudora would not start.

Any other suggestions?

Expert:  Pete replied 10 months ago.

Hi Richard,

Yes, there are further steps we can take to troubleshoot this difficult problem.

Next, go to the Eudora DATA directory and look for the following files and rename them as -> Old.

Here are some examples: in.mbx -> oldin.mbx, in.toc -> oldin.toc, out.mbx -> oldout.mbx, out.toc -> oldout.toc, junk.mbx -> oldjunk.mbx, junk.toc -> oldjunk.toc, trash.mbx -> oldtrash.mbx, trash.toc -> oldtrash.toc.

Once this is completed, delete the file Descmap.pce from the same directory and try to start Eudora.

NOTE: Your In, Out, and Trash mailboxes will be empty, HOWEVER, all of your old mail will be stored in 'Old' mailboxes (from examples above) named OldIn, OldOut, OldJunk, and OldTrash, and you can revert back by removing 'Old' from the name again.

If that does not help, go back to the Eudora DATA directory and delete the folder EudPriv. Then try and start Eudora again.

Let me know if either of those suggestions works.

Customer: replied 10 months ago.

Pete,

Thanks for your suggestion of 03 Sept. 2013 2:55 PM EST. Sorry for my delay.

So far I have not been able to locate "Eudora DATA directory." I tried the following:

MaxintoshHD/Applications/EudoraApplicationFolder/EudoraDocumentation/NO data Directory

MaxintoshHD//System/Library/60Folders, each with obscure label, no labels such "Data directory"

I searched the above two for your suggested

"in.mbx -> oldin.mbx, in.toc -> oldin.toc, out.mbx -> oldout.mbx, out.toc -> oldout.toc, junk.mbx -> oldjunk.mbx, junk.toc -> oldjunk.toc, trash.mbx -> oldtrash.mbx, trash.toc -> oldtrash.toc"

but found no such items.

Do you have any suggestions?

Hi Richard,

The next step is to uninstall and reinstall Eudora.

That should bring it back to life again.

Let me know how it goes.

Pete.

Customer: replied 10 months ago.

If possible I'd like to retain the messages in my in and out boxes as they were before Eudora crashed. If I do an "uninstall" I suspect that those

messages will be wiped out. Is that correct?

I've tried repeatedly to install Eudors 6.2.4 without first doing an uninstall, but I always get a message "The application Eudors 6.2.4 OSX can't be opened."

I have a "G-Drive" attached to my iMac which is *supposed* to back up everything, but so far I've not been able to find any backups of my mail boxes.

BTW: to do an "unistall" do I have to drag all the Eudora stuff on my computer into the trash?

Expert:  Pete replied 10 months ago.

Your emails will be stored in an online server if your email provider is Google, Hotmail, AOL, or many of the other providers. When you set up Eudora again, all of the emails in your inbox and outbox will be downloaded again from your email provider.

Customer: replied 10 months ago.

I found the following in Eudora's Technical Help:

". . . you can try the following steps to recover the mail. Firstly, don't quit Eudora. Leave Eudora running.Open your Eudora Folder (usually found in either the System Folder or your Documents folder). Inside the Eudora Folder, open the Mail Folder. Find the mailbox that used to have your mail. Make a backup copy of the mailbox right now - move the backup into another safe folder. Once you've made the backup, quit Eudora and restart it. Try to open the corrupted mailbox. It should give you an error message that the mailbox needs to be rebuilt - tell it to create a new table of contents. If the mailbox does not display your old mail or if Eudora crashes, the mailbox is irrepairably damaged or corrupted."

I found the out and in mail folders and will move the contents to safe folders, and then follow the above directions. I'll let you know what happens.

Expert:  Pete replied 10 months ago.

Ok, hopefully it work!

Let me know if you need any further assistance.

Pete.

Customer: replied 10 months ago.

Pete,

Thanks for all your past suggestions. I followed Eudora's technical help as indicted in my last reply, but it did not work. I've finally concluded that Eudora is a lost cause. They are a division of Qualcomm. Qualcomm is evidently not interested in supporting either the free or paid versions of Eudora.

I'm now trying to switch over to Apple's Mail server.
