when i plugged my 2-year-old MacBook Pro into a large, flat-screen

This answer was rated:

when i plugged my 2-year-old MacBook Pro into a large, flat-screen TV from Philips ---and the cables fit perfectly---from the smallest video hole on the left side of the computer then using a HDMI end to plug perfectly into the TV, I could not get the stuff on my laptop screen to appear on the TV screen. The "starry sky" of Mac laptops appeared perfectly on the TV screen, but THAT was not what was on my mac desktop screen. My desktop screen had a leopard photo and a bunch of files on it... What did I do wrong?

Jason :

Hello and thank you for your question today. My name isXXXXX look forward to helping you today.

Jason :

It sounds like you have it working. The TV will be a 2nd monitor. Drag a window to the left, right, up and down in the main screen until you see it on the TV.

Jason :

Does that make sense?

Jason :

Hello

Customer:

hi

Customer:

hang on a sec, Jason

Jason :

Were you able to get that working? If not, may I remote in and set that up?

Jason :

oh okay

Jason :

Thank you

Customer:

walk me through it please

Customer:

i am stupid about macs

Customer:

i am typing on this very mac right now

Customer:

but i am far from the TV

Customer:

250 km from the TV

Jason :

oh okay

Customer:

but i will try to buy a second TV today, so I beter know how the hell to test it

Customer:

these are for giving lectures and showing stuff to visitors

Customer:

so, i have the mac here

Customer:

what do you want me to do with a window?

Jason :

The tv is set up as a 2nd monitor. You can think of the 2nd monitor as a logical monitor to the left or right of your main screen. When you drag something to the far left or far right, it will appear on the 2nd monitor.

Jason :

The window, will need to be dragged onto the '2nd monitor' which is the tv.

Customer:

The TV will be a 2nd monitor. Drag a window to the left, right, up and down in the main screen until you see it on the TV.

Customer:

ok

Customer:

let me read

Jason :

Yes

Jason :

That is exactly correct.

Customer:

so i needed to drag something far right or far left on my mac screen?

Customer:

in order for it to appear on the TV screen?

Jason :

yes

Customer:

that had the starry night/

Customer:

?

Jason :

When you do that, it will appear on the tv.

Customer:

oh damn

Customer:

i had no idea

Jason :

:)

Jason :

Yes, that is how it works.

Customer:

the last time i plugged the laptop into a big TV, my laptop screen appeared just as it looked

Jason :

If you have any issues later on, please, let me know.

Jason :

Oh

Jason :

Customer:

how come it did not appear last time?

Customer:

there are TV's A, B, C

Customer:

on A it worked fine

Customer:

on B i had starry night

Customer:

C I will test today

Customer:

and have not tested yet

Jason :

Lovely

Customer:

you are saying that on B i should simply drag something to the far edge and it should appear?

Customer:

far edge of mac screen?

Jason :

Yes

Customer:

and then will appear on the TV?

Jason :

Yes

Customer:

how far do i have to drag it and why did it not need that on A

Customer:

on TV A

Customer:

this question must come up all the time

Jason :

Just a few inches past the left or right margin

Customer:

you must have heard it 1000 times

Jason :

Yes it does

Jason :

I have heard it a few thousand times :)

Jason :

And I am super happy to help each time.

Customer:

just a few inches past the left or right margin

Customer:

can you possibly show me ?

Customer:

can you show me a short video on this? there must be videos on youtube about this problem

Jason :

yes

Customer:

as there is everythign there

Customer:

but this was mission critical and i did not have time to screw around

Customer:

rooting around on YT

Jason :

oh okay

Customer:

show me the link for the best YT video that shows this

Customer:

i can also go and look at YT while we are typing here

Jason :

There is nothing really that needs to be done. You drag the window to the far left or far right. That is all.

Customer:

so even this window of you and me typing

Customer:

i just drag this to the edge

Jason :

Yes, and passed the edge.

Customer:

and it would appear on the TV?

Customer:

i end up with all but the last one half inch being OFF the obvious screen

Jason :

Yes.

Jason :

So...

Customer:

so you are saying that all our chat would be on the TV screen if I did that?

Customer:

jesus

Customer:

that was easy

Customer:

in that case

Jason :

Continue dragging it to the location you wish to have it.

Jason :

Yes :)

Customer:

i wonder why TV A did not require that

Customer:

any idea?

Customer:

does it vary from TV to TV?

Jason :

It may have been setup to clone and not extend.

Customer:

oh

Customer:

and who "sets up" what?

Jason :

In that case, what you see on the mac screen would be duplicated on the tv.

Customer:

the TV comes set up either to clone or to extend?

Customer:

and TV comes from the factory set to one or the other?

Customer:

is that it?

Jason :

That particular value is set on the Mac.

Jason :

You can set it as clone or extended.

Customer:

and so this is so that you can have stupid stuff on your mac screen and fool on your mac screen and not have your

Customer:

fooling around appear to your audience?

Customer:

is that the idea?

Jason :

Yes

Customer:

where do I find that setting?

Customer:

in that case

Jason :

Often times, people like having two monitors for that reason and others.

Customer:

as I did not touch anything that I am aware of, but on A it worked and on B it did not

Customer:

on B i had starry night, which is a mac screen

Customer:

i realized

Jason :

It is random at times.

Customer:

i am sure you are right, but i want to know how i change the

Customer:

my mac

Customer:

from extend to clone

Customer:

where is that setting

Jason :

oh okay

Customer:

now things are becoming clearer

Customer:

where do i go to choose extend or clone?

Jason :

On the Mac, click the Apple icon on the top left > System Preferences > Displays

Jason :

You can set it there.

Customer:

ok

Customer:

let me look quickly

Customer:

we are almost done

Jason :

On that window, click the Arrangement tab and put a check in the "Mirror Displays" checkbox.

Jason :

That will be all you need to do.

Customer:

i was lookingat displays but now i see this new stuff from you

Jason :

Very good

Customer:

hang oni found

Jason :

Thank you

Customer:

hang on a moment

Jason :

Thank you

Customer:

is there an easy way for me to show you what's on my screen?

Jason :

Yes

Jason :

I can remote in if you wish.

Customer:

as it get all sorts of info about monitors but i don't see that mirror hting

Customer:

sure, remote in

Customer:

tha

Jason :

oh okay

Customer:

that's great

Customer:

i don't know how you do that, but i am sure you do

Jason :

Thank you.

Customer:

Jason :

Customer:
