Hi - have a one year old imac 27", was having an issue with the screen going black after a few minutes but now when I switch on the screen goes gray and the switches itself off again.
Any thoughts appreciated.

Hello Brian, my name is Dan.
I will do my best to help you, the only stupid question is the unasked one.

The bad news is, it needs service. Most likely it is the power supply with a heat issue.
You say it is one year, if the anniversary date is not yet reached Apple will repair it free.
If you bought Applecare then it is covered for 3 years.
I have know Apple stores to repair under warranty if no more than 1 month over the out of date.
Worth a try in any event. There is no fix I can suggest that will help.
One thing for sure, it is hardware.
Hope that helps, wish I had an easy fix for it.
Your data is more than likely safe so if they want to trade machines have them swap drives unless you have it currently backed up.
