Yes, and I have done the back-up many times...but can't seem to do the back-up today?

No..I will try it again...I usully just plug it in and it will automatcally do the update to the passport.
Try this, click on the apple logo in the upper left corner. Choose system preferences and then choose Time machine. If there is an error, it will be listed there
