Flash plugin is blocked on iMac running Safari, 10.6.8

This answer was rated:

Hi. I have an iMac running Safari, 10.6.8. I downloaded a new version of Flash and now all videos won't run because the Flash plugin is blocked. I never had this problem before. I did a clean un-install of Norton and retried it and I still have this problem.
Thanks for the help.

Hi and Welcome. I look forward to assisting you today with your question.

On your Mac, open your hard disk Macintosh HD (or Mac HD). Open Library folder. Open Internet Plugins folder. In there, delete all files related to Flash or Shockwave

Then in there, open the Disabled Plugins folder, then trash all files from there.

Then download and install latest Flash Player from here : http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Please let me know if that didn't work, so we can continue troubleshooting.

I no longer get the "blocked plugin" message but videos still don't play. Do I empty the trash first and do I have to reboot?

No need to empty Trash, but restart your Mac. If that didn't work, trash Flash Player again from Internet Plugins folder. Then goto Youtube.com and play any video. It will ask you to download Flash Player to watch videos. So download from there itself. Let me know how it goes.

YouTube works but other video sites do not. On those I still get a blocked plugin message.

If Youtube is working then Flash Player is working. Could you please give me the name of the sites that doesn't work ?

Now they have a Flash plug in in the center of the video scream. I clicked it and downloaded again. The video still doesn't play. How can it be that YT runs but the other sites do not?

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

CNET for one.

Not sure, but Youtube won't work without Flash Player. We can uninstall Flash Player with Flash Player uninstaller and then reinstall it again

Download and uninstall Flash Player with Uninstaller from here : http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/support/uninstall_flash_player_osx_10.4.dmg

Download and install Flash Player from here : http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

After uninstalling, delete the following files/folders:

Macintosh HD\Library\Internet Plug-Ins\Flash Player.plugin
Macintosh HD\Library\Internet Plug-Ins\flashplayer.xpt
Macintosh HD\Library\Preferences\Macromedia\Flash Player\
Macintosh HD\Library\Caches\Adobe\Flash Player\

If you can't find any files, Ignore them. Make sure you close the browsers before uninstall Flash Player.

Then install the latest version of Flash Player. Did that work ?

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

I am utterly confused. I downloaded he uninstaller but where the hell is it? I still have the Flash installer icon on my screen.

Sorry for the confusion. The Flash Player uninstaller is a small file. It should be saved to your Downloads folder (in Home folder) or in Desktop. Can't you find it ?

If not, download it again from here : http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/support/uninstall_flash_player_osx_10.4.dmg

That is the direct download link, when you click the link it will start downloading automatically or ask you to download it automatically.

Yes. Found it. And, I trashed the multiple Flash install files as well. I'll do a new install now.

If possible, download and install flash player from different browser like Firefox or Chrome.

Safari sometimes doesn't detect and download correct version of Flash Player.
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Okay. I installed it again. But it's the same situation. YT works but other sites do not. So you're suggesting that I use a different OS? That's not why I own a Mac. And, I don't know if I have the space for two OSs. Why would I never have this problem before with earlier versions? And, if Flash works on YT why would it not work on other sites?

However I'm willing to try this.

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Okay, Ashik. I installed Chrome and the videos work. Thank you for your help.

No, not OS. But different browser like Firefox or Chrome. Firefox and Chrome are internet browser like your Safari browser. Firefox or Chrome are more advanced than Safari, IMO

Some websites can only work with new flash player and some work with old ones too. Youtube does support old (not very old) and new version of Flash Player. It seems like your Mac is confused with the flash player that got installed.

Now I want you to download Firefox from here : http://download.mozilla.org/?lang=en-US&product=firefox-19.0.2&os=osx

Open Firefox. Goto Youtube or CNET and see if you are able to play videos. If it is asked to download flash player, then download and install it from there.

Install Firefox. Open Firefox and download Flash Player from Firefox

Ahh...Sorry. I didn't see your last post. Chrome will work too. The great thing about Chrome or Firefox is, there are hundreds of cool plugin out there for them. See here : https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions?hl=en

For Firefox, see here : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/

Since the videos work in Chrome, I believe that the problem is with Safari browser. Safari is not yet updated for latest Flash Player. So make sure you do all updates from Apple > Software Updates.
