hi i have just got one of the brand new imac's and am trying to transfer data over from my old 10.4 iMac - cant use migration assistant...what can i do? eeek

DaniBigApple :

Are you using a firewire to attempt the transfer?

Customer:

it doesnt have a firewire port

DaniBigApple :

Do you have an available external hard drive?

Customer:

yep i was just doing a backup on to a lacie hardrive whihch is taking a long time..but yes :)

DaniBigApple :

You will have to drag and drops your folders like , music, pictures, documents , movies etc on to there and then manually drag and drop into the new one.

DaniBigApple :

Yea its going to take quite sometime. With the new machine it will be much much faster when its taking in the data

Customer:

yes i tested that out but was hoping there was a better way than that...also do you know how i can transfer my software this way - adobe suite and microsoft word etc

DaniBigApple :

Most of your applications wont work on the new system anyway so Id skip that folder

DaniBigApple :

WH]hat version of Microsoft Office are you using and Adobe?

DaniBigApple :

The new system you have , 10.8 is very paticular on the versions it supports

Customer:

ah right, ive got cs4 adobe and office 2004...in other words old!

DaniBigApple :

This might be easier for you to view.

DaniBigApple :

http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

Customer:

i guess i need to get updated and move in to the future!

DaniBigApple :

2004 office will not work. For adobe says it MAY

DaniBigApple :

However if you moved all the files properly it will still prompt for the serial number as it recognizes a new machine ID

Customer:

so i'll give it a try and do i need to just drag the apps folder over and doubleclick and see what happens?

DaniBigApple :

You will also need to move the Application Support folder ~/Library/ you can usually go to finder and then "go" then enter in what I had typed there

DaniBigApple :

Should take you right to it. In mountain lion its hidden so you will have to do the same in the new machine

DaniBigApple :

If the application in in compatible it will show a prohibitory symbol though the application icon

Customer:

right ok i'm going to try all of thi stomorrow once my data has been backed up to the hard drive- thank you for your help :-)

DaniBigApple :

If you have an other questions please feel free to message back!

DaniBigApple :

I know data transfers are frustruating!

Customer:
