Is there a way to place an iPhoto Library on iCloud, so I do

Resolved Question:

Is there a way to place an iPhoto Library on iCloud, so I do not have to store all my photos in my Mac? If so, what would the steps be?

Appleologist :

Hi, and welcome to JustAnswer! My name is XXXXX XXXXX X am excited to get started with you.

Since iCloud has limited storage, you do not have the option to store your entire library onto iCloud. However, you can add photos to photostream which can be accessible from any IOS mobile device and online

Customer:

I have 20 gb space with iCloud now and am concern to get a back up on iCloud. My Library is 10 gb.

Appleologist :

If that is the case, you can drag your photos into photo stream and share it with yourself so that it will always be visible. You should also back them up to an external hard drive incase you will need to free up some storage space in the future

Appleologist :

Is your iphoto currently open? If so, you will see photo stream in the left column under "web"

Customer:

Yes, it is open. I have it on but I have 2,700 photos in my iPhoto Library but only about 650 are in the photo stream.

Appleologist :

Ok, So what you can do is to select all of your photos and then drag them into photo stream. It will prompt you to create an album. You can name it whatever you wish and in to to: XXXXX XXXXX you email address that is associate with your icloud account

Customer:

Under web I have my Flicker account, but not all the photos are there either.

Appleologist :

Under Library, click on Photos to see your entire iphoto library

Customer:

I am looking at my iPhoto now

Appleologist :

Are all of your photos still in your iphoto library?

Customer:

I see them all

Appleologist :

Ok so then drag all of them into photo strea

Appleologist :

stream*

Customer:

Mean to highlight them all and then drag to the Photo Stream icon?

Appleologist :

Correct. Click on Edit<Select All

Customer:

Again Photo stream is not under WEB. It is under RECENT as following

Customer:

RECENT

Appleologist :

Click on iPhoto in the top menu bar and choose preferences

Customer:

RECENT Jul 2, 2011 - Last Import - Last 12 Months - Photo Stream - Flagged - Trash

Appleologist :

Click on iPhoto in the top menu bar and choose preferences.

Customer:

General opened up

Appleologist :

Do you see an photostream tab?

Customer:

I tapped on Photo Stream and all 2 boxes are checked

Appleologist :

You should have 4 check boxes

Appleologist :

If not, click on accounts and make sure your icloud account is entered

Customer:

Is moblieMe the iCloud account?

Appleologist :

Yes. Do you own and ipad or iphone?

Customer:

iphone

Appleologist :

On your iphone, go to settings<iCloud. The email address that is listed there should be the same email address listed in iphoto

Customer:

It is, but I cannot log in, for it is not reconizing my password. Is it not my Apple ID password?

Appleologist :

yes it is your apple ID password

Customer:

Will not allow me to log in with my password

Appleologist :

on your phone, go to settings< itunes and app store. Is the email address listed the same?

Customer:

My photos are streaming from that iphone though

Customer:

I know I have the right email address and password XXXXX

Appleologist :

Ok, go to settings itunes and app store. Click on your email address and choose view account. Enter your password

Customer:

I will, and in the meantime I see a note in my records under MobileMe with my email account saying "Cancelled on 6/6/2010"

Appleologist :

Where do you see this note?

Appleologist :

Mobile me transitioned to iCloud so that is fine

Customer:

Note I personally made. I logged in sucessfully to my Apple account and see my past history purchases

Appleologist :

Ok good. Is that the same password XXXXX were entering in iphoto?

Customer:

This is where I am logged in https://secure2.store.apple.com/us/order/list?hist=90

Customer:

Same email address and password

Appleologist :

Ok good.

Appleologist :

Just wanted to confirm everything is in sync with each other

Customer:

Before I asked this question I was logged into my iCloud account

Appleologist :

You should always be logged into your icloud account

Appleologist :

Did you also log into icloud in system preferences?

Customer:

I did just before I sent the question to see how much space I had left

Appleologist :

Ok good. Now you are all set to start dragging and dropping your photos into photo stream

Appleologist :

If it is listed under recent, that is fine

Customer:

I just checked and I am logged into my iCloud account

Appleologist :

Good. In the left column do you still see photo stream?

Customer:

All 2,700 photo seem not to want to go over. I hightlight them all and go to drag them and the "rubber band" back to the Photo slot.

Appleologist :

Try a smaller batch to see life 20

Customer:

I tapped on Photo Stream icon and it opened up. It is saying it is uploading 3,095 photos but not counting down

Customer:

I tried one photo and also 10 but they are not in photo stream at this time.

Appleologist :

You mentioned that it is currently uploading 3,095 photos

Customer:

I believe I have seen this statement at the top right a day or so before saying it was "Uploading 3,095 photos, but it has never changed.

Appleologist :

Ok, can you click on iphoto at the top menu bar and choose about iphoto. Are you running iphoto 11?

Customer:

This statement is at the top right of all my photos shown in Photo Stream. But the number is XXXXX

Appleologist :

Click on iphoto at the top menu bar and choose about iphoto. Are you running iphoto 11?

Customer:

Yes 11

Appleologist :

OK good. Now under web has photo stream appeared yet

Customer:

No

Customer:

Only Flicker

Appleologist :

Hmm. Click on the apple logo in the upper left corner, choose system preferences and then choose icloud

Appleologist :

Can you confirm that photo stream is checked?

Customer:

I now notice a spinning wheel at the right of Faces

Customer:

It is checked

Appleologist :

in iphoto, can you go back to preferences<photo stream. You should have 4 check boxes

Customer:

just 3

Appleologist :

And all are checked correct?

Customer:

The only 3 boxes are Enable Photo Stream, Automatic Import, and Automatic Upload

Customer:

All 3 checked

Appleologist :

try this, Select all pictures again, Choose share from the top menu and then choose photo stream

Customer:

I have lots of space on Flicker, can I try highlighting them and adding them. Flicker is under WEB

Appleologist :

That is also an option if you wish

Customer:

The only option I can use is "Set Desktop"

Appleologist :

what happens when you just choose one photo

Customer:

I see all the other options but they are light grey in color

Customer:

The same when I pick one photo, only Set Desktop under Share

Appleologist :

your iphoto does not sound normal. Lets try to repair iphotos permissions. Quit iphoto.Press and hold Command+option+shift key while opening iphoto

Appleologist :

You will then get a dialogue box. Choose repair permissions

Customer:

There

Appleologist :

Did you choose repair permissions?

Customer:

I checked only the box which says "Examine and repair iPhoto Library file permissions"

Customer:

Now select "Rebuild"?

Appleologist :

Yes

Customer:

It was fast and now I see my photo stream photos

Appleologist :

Ok good. How many are in there

Customer:

Looks just like before

Customer:

Only 3 boxes to check under Photo Stream and only my Flicker account under WEB. The statement of "Uploading 3,095 photos" at top right. NO ROTATING CLOCK NEXT TO FACES THOUGH

Customer:

I selected just one photo and went to "Share" and only option is "Set Desktop"

Appleologist :

Hmm thats strange. Can you click on the apple logo in the upper left corner and choose software updates. Which updates are available?

Customer:

Hold on!

Appleologist :

ok

Customer:

I went to photos and highliged them all and at the bottom there is an arrow that allows me to emial them or send them to Flicker and I see Photo Stream

Appleologist :

new information: I just looked up additional information on photo stream. since it does not count as actual storage, you can only upload 1000 photos at a time

Customer:

I selected MobileMe Gallary

Appleologist :

Your Gallery is still active?

Customer:

It now says share 2,940 photos. I see all the options such as Flicker and MobelMe now in gray and not an option anymore. Like it is doing something.

Customer:

I opened Photo Stream and now at the top is says "Uploading 6,003 photos" Does not look good

Appleologist :

Go to iphoto and click on preferences. Click on photo stream and uncheck My photo stream

Customer:

Your Gallery is still active? YES

Appleologist :

ok

Appleologist :

Did you uncheck photo stream yet>

Customer:

Not yet

Appleologist :

Are there any photos that are in photo stream that are not anywhere else?

Customer:

I exported them over to an USB drive

Customer:

YOUR QUESTION: Which updates are available? ANSWER: Software Update doesn’t have any new software for your computer at this time.

Appleologist :

Ok good. Since your photo stream is trying to upload so many photos at a time. I suggest turning it off so It can reset again

Customer:

Will I loose the photos there? If so, I will want to move them over one more time, just to make sure I have them. There is about 600 photos there now.

Appleologist :

Ok, do you still see the 600 photos?

Customer:

Yes, and I am uploading them into my iPhoto Library at this time

Customer:

25% done so far

Appleologist :

Ok, let me know when it is done

Customer:

40%

Customer:

70%

Appleologist :

getting there

Customer:

It went all the way across and now saying "Importing Photos". Should be soon!

Appleologist :

Thats fine

Customer:

Done! I checked also and they are now in the Library

Customer:

What next

Appleologist :

Go to iphoto's preferences and choose photo stream

Appleologist :

Uncheck the boxes

Customer:

I unchecked all 3 boxes. It gave me the warning that all photos will be deleted in Photo Stream which is fine for they are in the Library. It seems to be working now.

Appleologist :

Ok good.

Appleologist :

Now when you check them back, photo stream should be reset

Customer:

Still working

Appleologist :

Ok, let me know when its done

Customer:

Still working, and I will let you know when it is done

Appleologist :

Thanks

Customer:

Still working... seems as slow as the export was for the 600 photos

Appleologist :

Its ok... I have all day :)

Customer:

I am in the Cayman Island on Island time

Appleologist :

What time is it over there?

Customer:

Same time just in the low 80s

Customer:

http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p341910#summary

Appleologist :

Its snowing over here

Customer:

Photo Stream is still working

Appleologist :

Ok

Appleologist :

This is gorgeous!

Customer:

We came from Russia where we spent New Years and it was -40c below at night

Appleologist :

Wow! Thats really cold! I would never leave the house

Customer:

Went swimming by breaking the ice on New Years day!

Customer:

I am American any those Russians are crazy, but it was fun to join them. When in Rome do as the Romans they say.

Customer:

Still in the loop

Appleologist :

Ha ha!! That is so true

Customer:

The Photo Stream may be in a constant loop trying to see what to do with the 6,000 photos it was trying to upload. What do you say that we force a quit on iPhoto and see where it is, by opening it up after it closes?

Appleologist :

Sure you can do that. Also turn off photo stream on your phone and in system preferences

Customer:

I turned it off with my iPhone in the settings and then to system preference and Photo Stream box was unchecked when I looked. It was checked earlier, but now unchecked. I guess it did that it's self.

Appleologist :

It does it automatically when you unchecked it in iphoto

Customer:

When I went to "Force Quit" it showed it was "Not Responding" I will open it now

Customer:

It came up asking if I want to turn on Photo Stream?

Appleologist :

Yes

Customer:

I did, and it opened up with all my photos. It also seems frozen in a task.

Customer:

I did not do a "Force Quit" again, but checked and it says "Not Responding"

Appleologist :

So iphoto is frozen again?

Customer:

yes

Appleologist :

force quit and re-open while holding down the command+option+shift key

Customer:

I may have to do a restart with the Mac

Customer:

Will do

Appleologist :

Choose repair permissions

Customer:

check premission box?

Appleologist :

Yes

Appleologist :

And rebuild

Customer:

Just the one box correct?

Appleologist :

Yes

Appleologist :

The first one

Customer:

It came quicky back but still foozen in a task

Customer:

All photos are there too

Appleologist :

Ok, force quit again. Press command+option and shift and choose rebuild. The last option

Customer:

I did and checked “Examine and repair iPhoto Library file permissions Then selected “Rebuild”

Appleologist :

Is iphoto still non-responsive?

Customer:

It came right back still frozen. It does say it is only downloading only 113 photos now instead of 6,000

Appleologist :

Are you able to click around within iphoto?

Customer:

Maybe I should restart the Mac?

Customer:

Yes

Appleologist :

If your able to click around. It seems life iphoto is not frozen anymore. It is just waiting on photo stream to catch up

Appleologist :

and reverse the 6000 photos

Customer:

Cannot click around

Appleologist :

Oh ok. Before you restart. We will reset iphoto. Force quit iphoto. Click on finder (Click on the happy face icon in the dock)

Appleologist :

Choose Go from the top menu and choose Go to folder

Appleologist :

Paste this into the search box ~/Library

Customer:

Where is the "Happy Face"

Appleologist :

It should be the first icon in the dock

Customer:

Dock?

Appleologist :

There should be application icons at the bottom

Customer:

Not sure what you mean "Dock"?

Appleologist :

Appleologist :

This is the dock

Appleologist :

If you can not find the finder icon in the dock, Click on the magnifying glass in the upper right corner and type in documents. The finder window will then open

Customer:

I have the magnifying glass

Appleologist :

Ok, click on the magnifying glass and type in documents

Appleologist :

A finder window should pop up

Customer:

I placed ~/Library and found nothing

Appleologist :

You will need to choose Go in to top menu first. While in finder, choose Go from the top menu bar, choose "go to folder"

Customer:

I see Go at the top but no "Go to folder"

Appleologist :

Go to folder should be the second to last one

Customer:

I did it and entered ~/Library. Many files came up

Customer:

I mean folders

Appleologist :

Ok good. Within the library folder, do you see a preference folder

Customer:

Yes

Appleologist :

Within the preference folder, locate and delete these files. Make sure iphoto is closed

com.apple.iLifeAssetManagement.crash.plist com.apple.iLifeAssetManagement.crash.plist.lockfile com.apple.iLifeAssetManagement.crash.plist.okt7e0D com.apple.iLifePhotoStream.importstatus.plist com.apple.iLifePhotoStream.importstatus.plist.lockfile com.apple.iLifePhotoStream.plist com.apple.iLifePhotoStream.plist.lockfile

Customer:

Found

file://localhost/Users/bernardfisher/Library/Preferences/com.apple.CrashReporter.plist, but only folder with Crash on it.

Appleologist :

scroll down until you see com.apple.iLifeAssetManagement.crash.plist. they are in alphabetical order

Customer:

Found the

file://localhost/Users/bernardfisher/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iLifeAssetManagement.crash.plist.lockfile

Appleologist :

Good there should be 7 files that contain life assest management along with photostream

Customer:

Found this com.apple.iLifeAssetManagement.crash.plist

Appleologist :

com.apple.iLifePhotoStream.plist.lockfile

Appleologist :

Delete those files

Customer:

There are 7 correct

Appleologist :

Ok delete all 7

Appleologist :

You can just drag them into the trash

Customer:

I will start with deleting the 7 files with iLifePhoto

Appleologist :

iLifeAssetmanagement.crash should be the first one

Customer:

The 7 are trashed

Customer:

How about the crash file or other files you first said

Appleologist :

Everything on this list needs to be deleted

com.apple.iLifeAssetManagement.crash.plist

com.apple.iLifeAssetManagement.crash.plist.lockfile com.apple.iLifeAssetManagement.crash.plist.okt7e0D

com.apple.iLifePhotoStream.importstatus.plist

com.apple.iLifePhotoStream.importstatus.plist.lockfile

com.apple.iLifePhotoStream.plist

com.apple.iLifePhotoStream.plist.lockfile

Appleologist :

Confirm these were deleted

Customer:

Yes, they are the 7 starting with IlifePhotoStream

Customer:

The 7 are deleted

Appleologist :

Ok now scroll down and delete these last 2

com.apple.iPhoto.LSSharedFileList.plist
com.apple.iPhoto.plist

Customer:

Appleologist :

OK now empty your trash and then open iphoto

Customer:

iPhoto came up and asked questions like do you want to see your photos on a map and son on

Appleologist :

Choose yes

Customer:

I looked at Photo Stream and it is asking to be turned on

Appleologist :

Go to system preferences and click on icloud. Check photo stream there

Customer:

How do I switch Library

Appleologist :

Is the library blank?

Customer:

I went to systems and iCloud was already checked

Appleologist :

Ok. Go back to iphoto and turn photo stream on

Customer:

I have two libraries

Appleologist :

Did you always have 2 libraries?

Customer:

Done

Customer:

I moved my photo over to LiveDrive and nothing on my HD.

Appleologist :

Are there currently photos in iphoto?

Customer:

I remember it was "option" iPhoto

Appleologist :

Oh ok you want to switch..sorry

Appleologist :

Yes launch iphoto while pressing snd holding the option key

Customer:

I am now in my large library

Appleologist :

Then you can choose your library

Appleologist :

Quit iphoto and press the option key while opening iphoto to switch

Customer:

The photo stream is 792 photo and is attempting to do something

Appleologist :

Allow it to finish. Since it will max out at 1000 photos

Customer:

It is not upload any photo but may be filling in the ones that are blank

Customer:

Everything is frozen again

Appleologist :

Quit iphoto and turn photo stream off from system preferences

Appleologist :

Is there a reason why you have 2 libraries?

Customer:

I bought 2tb on livedrive.com to up load photos but found out I need to pay $25.00 per month. I moved them to the livedrive on my desktop thinking they were in a "cloud" bur found out that actually livedrive is more a devise to share what is on my Mac with others.

Customer:

I started this process for my start disk was getting full

Customer:

Now I have10 gb free on my Mac

Appleologist :

So you are looking to free up space?

Appleologist :

more space?

Customer:

yes, take my library and put on cloud

Appleologist :

As I mentioned to you earlier, photo steam will allow you to upload 1000 photos which will split your library. It is much easier to just keep your library on an external hard drive and delete the photos from your computer. Do you pay for Flickr?

Customer:

I have Flickr, and also ICloud and paid for 20 gb on each.

Appleologist :

The 20Gb storage does not include photos. I also just verified this on apple's site. It go towards backups, and documents. I am looking to see if you will be able to create multiple albums with 1000 photos in each

Customer:

I am just going to move over my photos to flicker. I was thinking that iCloud would better, but seems not

Appleologist :

Not for what you want. It only stores them for 30 days

Appleologist :

then it will start to delete them

Appleologist :

I believe flickr gives you 2gb which is not enough for your entire library

Customer:

Are you sure for I am paying for extra space with Flicker

Appleologist :

Oh I thought you had the standard one. Im sorry

Customer:

You have a Flickr Pro Account. It will renew on 1st January, 2014.

Appleologist :

Do you know how much storage you have?

Customer:

I am trying to find out. I see 1,290 photos | Joined 30 December 2011

Appleologist :

If not, you can also use MediaFire which gives you 50Gb free cloud storage which is more than enough

Appleologist :

You can even use both for additional backup

Customer:

I will use MediaFire and my UBS drive and Flicker. I am now going to sign off and restart my computer and hopefully the Photo Stream will fix it's self.

Appleologist :

Would you like to me stand by while you restart your computer. Since photo stream works fine in your other library, you can create a new one and drag your photos over

Customer:

no need for I am sure it will fix it's self. I think the issue may be trying to move 2,700 at one time.

Appleologist :

Ok, have a great night and best of luck

Customer:

I want to let you know that after a restart the Photo Stream came up fine and all photos there to, which is good but strange that they were not deleted like it said it was. Again, back to the way it was, which I am happy.

Appleologist :

Thats great news and thanks for the update. I sincerely XXXXX XXXXX patience throughout this process. Enjoy the rest of your evening

Customer:

I am trying to give you an excellent rating, but it just will not highlight. I will try again shortly.

Appleologist :

Hi Thank you for your feedback. It should be working now. Thank you and have a great night
