Hey folks, My Iphoto library (around 3000 photos) disappeared

Customer Question

Hey folks,

My Iphoto library (around 3000 photos) disappeared today.

When I click on Iphoto it asks what photo library i would like to use. I've tried to look for the folder but what I have found appears to be empty. I do have an external drive that hopefully was automatically saving with time machine but don't know how to look to see if it has a backup of the library.

This previously happened and i was able to locate the iphoto library file. But this time, it seems i have a new one named iphoto library 2 and it contains 12 images.

Not sure what happened, i've tried to restore the same file from time machine but this one also contains 12 images. I assume the original iphoto library is located somewhere else. When searching for Jpegs in finder, i couldn't locate any of the missing photos in neither my macbook nor the time machine.

HELP please.

Greetings,

Thank you for your question and your time today.

My name is Jason and I will be the expert working with you today to help resolve your problem.

You may have attempted to restore it from a Time Machine backup that was made after the problem started. Can you please, go back to a date that it was working and restore from that time?

Please, let me know how that goes.

Thank you.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Hi Jason,

thank you for getting back to me so promptly.

My latest backup was done on Jan 31st as soon as i came back from my trip. That did not work, so i 've also tried previous dates. Same issue.

I think the iphoto library 2 is one created my default the first time this issue happened. I think there's another folder with my photos that is currently absent from the pictures folders. I even went back to 6 months ago using the same iphoto library 2 and ended up with the same result.

Cheers.

Expert:  Jason replied 1 year ago.

I am sorry, but for some unknown reason, the remote feature does not appear as though it is going to work for you.

When was the last time you were able to view the missing photos?

One other thing, have you checked the Trash folder and verified that you didn't accidently move it there or delete it?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

I did empty my recycle bin today and the problem did occur after that.

in all cases, i still have my time machine backups. But even on it, i can only locate the same iphoto library 2.

I'm also unable to locate any of the jpegs from iphoto which leads me to assume that it's located in another folder (not in the picture folder). I have 8 backups all the way back from last year. in all of them, the iphoto library 2 is in the picture folder - more proof that the file is located somewhere else.

The time machine should have those files backed up correct?

Expert:  Jason replied 1 year ago.

If you deleted the main iPhoto library and then emptied the recycle bin, your photos are probably not recoverable.

Please, open finder and search for iPhoto Library

Excluding the iPhoto library 2 file, are you able to find another listing?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

I'm unable to locate neither iphoto library nor iphoto library 2 when when i search in all files.

But when i locate iphoto library 2 manually in pictures it's there.

I'm also certain that i haven't deleted the origianl file.

Not sure what went wrong.

Anyways, i'm on my way out.

assuming i have deleted it from my machine. Shouldn't it still be in the time machine backups?

Tx.

Expert:  Jason replied 1 year ago.

It "would" be in the Time Machine Backups, if you had the file located in the "Pictures" folder and/or Time Machine was enabled to make a backup of it.

It sounds like you may have placed the orignal iPhoto Library file in another folder or something along those lines.

When was the last time you were able to view the missing photos?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

I've checked all the folders throughout the different backup timelines, and all folders i.e. documents, pictures, music, desktop, etc...are backed up accordingly. From this i assume that wherever the file is located it should be backed up as well.

Question: Why am i not able to look up the Jpegs? are they compressed in some sort of file only viewable via Iphoto?

everything was working well up until noon today. Last i checked was in the morning and all was in order.

Expert:  Jason replied 1 year ago.

What is the size of the iPhoto Libary 2 file?

Right click the iPhoto Library 2 file, choose Show Package Contents, and look at the photos contained there. Are you able to find them there?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

it's 24MB. Nops, not it.

Expert:  Jason replied 1 year ago.

Search the Time Machine backup for anything that contains the word iPhoto do you find any larger files?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Hey Jason,

the good news was that i located an iphoto file which is 12.22 GB.

This was located in one of my first backups. The name isXXXXX

I probably renamed the folder and placed it somewhere else. I'll keep looking until i find it.

Cheers

Expert:  Jason replied 1 year ago.

Fantastic.

Once you locate the proper library, you can either restore that one or import it.

You are on the correct course.

Hey Jason,

thank you for bearing with me.

going through the history, i've realized that i've somehow removed the iphoto library from pictures and placed it in another folder calle the junk. Now i might have deleted that folder or just kept it somehwere on my mac.

The issue now is that spotlight is not finding existing files/folders which i know are there. I seem to be running from one problem to the next.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

one final thing - is there any way i can retrieve my photos from my iphone manually.

One of the albums lost is still on my iphone. it has videos and photos, i'd like to retrieve both.

What are my solutions?

Expert:  Jason replied 1 year ago.

If that is the case, you can copy them to your computer via iCloud or by syncing via iTunes.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

can you please walk me throught the icloud process. How do i upload my iphone photos/videos onto icloud?

as for syncing via itunes, it is not reading the images on my iphone. It is not asking me to import (iphone to pc) rather syncing with the existing mac photos.
