MacbookAir here, with 5 languages in the upper right corner.

Resolved Question:

MacbookAir here, with 5 languages in the upper right corner. But whenever I press Command-Space which I had happily used to switch between (then only two) languages I now get the blue Spotlight box which toggles on Command-Space. Can you tell me:
1) the key-shortcut to use between the 5 languages (ENglish,Chinese Traditional, CHinese SImplified, Japanese, Nepali and Devanagara

2)my DIsk Usage shows the disk nearly full - with my files taking up only a fraction of the space- the rest being yellow called "Other". Please advise on how to reduce this unknown :Other". Thanks

Steve Herrod :

Hi Joan, as you've noticed Spotlight now uses Command-Space

Steve Herrod :

but this can be amended using System preferences

Steve Herrod :

if you go to Apple Menu-->System Preferences-->Input menu

Steve Herrod :

and then look for the keyboard shortcuts button

Steve Herrod :

you can scroll down and see that the Input menu and Spotlight have the same key mapping

Steve Herrod :

it should be possible to change here to another key combination

Steve Herrod :

so that should solve problem 1

Steve Herrod :

as for the Disk usage

Steve Herrod :

are you using Time Machine as the 'Other' could refer to numerous backups

Steve Herrod :

or .mobile backups

Steve Herrod :

I would recommend using one of these utiltities

Steve Herrod :

which will show each folder on the disk and how much space is being taken up

Steve Herrod :

so it should be possible to determine what the 'Other' refers to

Customer:

Can't find Input Menu under Systerm Preferenced - May I send u a ScreenSHot (how)?

Steve Herrod :

sorry, it's System Preferences-->International

Steve Herrod :

then you should have Input menu

Steve Herrod :

Steve Herrod :

should look similar to that

Customer:

Don't have INternatnional either. How to send yu a screenshot of mty Macbook Air's system Preferences?

Steve Herrod :

Command-Control-Shift-3

Steve Herrod :

should take a screenshot and save to clipboard

Steve Herrod :

and then you can just paste in here

Customer:

I have on the MacBook Air SP:Top line under PErsonal a Language andf Text. But that does not show the choices you spictured either. Just a vertical column of languages

Customer:

followed by a different column of Input SOurces

Steve Herrod :

ok, do you have System Preferences-->Keyboard & Mouse?

Customer:

Why can't I "Attach" my screenshots for you? under the clip pictured above here?

Customer:

Yes have SY keyboard & Mouse

Steve Herrod :

ok - if you go to keyboard and mouse

Steve Herrod :

do you have keyboard shortcuts?

Customer:

No, they are separate items in the SECOND rowHardware

Steve Herrod :

ok - if you go to Apple menu and choose About this Mac

Steve Herrod :

what is the full version of OSX listed?

Customer:

10.8.2

Customer:

how to send you screenshots, p,ease?

Steve Herrod :

does Command-Control-Shift-3 take a screenshot and put it on your clipboard?

Customer:

yes - it's on the desktop

Steve Herrod :

Ok - dragging it into the chat should work

Steve Herrod :

can you try these steps?

Steve Herrod :

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Language & Text, and then click Input Sources.

  2. Make sure at least one input method is selected, and then click the Keyboard Shortcuts button.

  3. In the Keyboard Shortcuts pane that appears, select Spotlight from the left side of the pane, and then deselect the Spotlight checkboxes.

  4. Select Keyboard & Text Input from the left side of the pane, and then select the “Select the previous input source” and the “Select the next source in Input menu” checkboxes.

Customer:

not on the "clipboard"

Customer:

No. I'm asked if I wish to leave or staty on Page

Customer:

how to identify "input method"?

Customer:

Don;t know how to select any "input method"

Steve Herrod :

the input methods should be listed on left hand side, select the default language there

Steve Herrod :

then you should be able to choose keyboard shortcutes

Customer:

also, keyboard shortcuts shows shortcuts to mission control, appoication widows, etc. but not to any language

Customer:

Gosh wish I could show you what I see. But dragging Screenshot into COnversation does NOT work. Image bounces back

Customer:

Also. no DEFAULT language

Customer:

At the very top, above "AfghanDari" is a line, above which is "Keyboard &Character VIewer.

Customer:

Do you mean to select THAT?

Steve Herrod :

ok - if you are in keyboard shortcuts that should be the right place

Steve Herrod :

no, if you are in keyboard shortcuts it should look like this?

Steve Herrod :

Steve Herrod :

if so - do the following two steps

Steve Herrod :

  1. In the Keyboard Shortcuts pane that appears, select Spotlight from the left side of the pane, and then deselect the Spotlight checkboxes.

  2. Select Keyboard & Text Input from the left side of the pane, and then select the “Select the previous input source” and the “Select the next source in Input menu” checkboxes.

Customer:

BUT, Steve- the shortcuts are NOT for languages, but for MIssion Control, for SHow Desktop, SHOW DAASHBOARD, MISSION CONTROL MOVE LEFT, MOVE RIGHT -NO language choices

Customer:

I find it frustrating not to be able to send you screenshots, nor to be able to actually TALK with you

Steve Herrod :

unfortunately we only have this live chat function, although I'm not sure why screenshots aren't working

Customer:

OK have done the above 2 steps

Steve Herrod :

ok

Customer:

gthen?

Customer:

Then?

Steve Herrod :

that should then allow the language shortcut to work as before

Customer:

I have deselected all but "select the previous input source" (although I'd selected 5 languages)

Customer:

lemme try, ONe minute please...

Steve Herrod :

ok

Steve Herrod :

this is the Apple article for the issue as well just for reference

Customer:

WOnderful Steve, That worked! 看看這個!

Steve Herrod :

:)

Customer:

Iguessittogglesbetweenjusttwo阿嚏啊time.RIght?

Steve Herrod :

yes

Customer:

I guess the toggle works between just TWO languages at a time, right?

Steve Herrod :

yes

Customer:

NOw about reducing the "Other" which occupies about 80 percent of my diskspace, me having deleted most files and apps.... Gow to clear those?

Customer:

Can't we find a way to show you my screenshots?

Steve Herrod :

I'm not sure the screenshots will help much - I've seen the issue before with 'other'

Steve Herrod :

I would recommend using one of these utiltitieshttp://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnidisksweeper/

9:30 AM

which will show each folder on the disk and how much space is being taken up

9:30 AM

so it should be possible to determine what the 'Other' refers to

Steve Herrod :

I've listed a couple of free applications which should show what the other is

Steve Herrod :

did the links come through ok?

Customer:

I'm trying the first OMNI SWEEPER which lists MBAir has having 13.4 GB free and 106.8 GB used - But my files don't add up to 50 GB

Customer:

including apps

Customer:

84.1 BG User (what's that?) 8.9 Apps, 5.2 private (what's that?), 3.4 Systerm, 3.4 LIbrary,

Customer:

381.2MB use (i=how does this differ from the 84.1GB above (I am the ONLY user)

Customer:

8.2 MB mach-kernel (what's that)?

Customer:

3.1 MB Bin(I've cleared trash )

Customer:

2.6 sBin (qhat's that)?

Customer:

16.4 KB .DS _Store (What's that)?

Customer:

4.1 kb etc, 4.1kb tmp, 4.1 kb var, (what's that)? 4.1 Volumes

Customer:

DOes this add up to 687.7 GB USED???

Customer:

reall8y puzzled, Steve, by this...

Steve Herrod :

ok

Steve Herrod :

things like mach-kernel, etc, tmp, var are the OSX system folders

Steve Herrod :

I wouldn't worry about those

Steve Herrod :

The User folder at 80GB seems like the strange one

Steve Herrod :

are you able to bring up any further information on it

Customer:

Now the Second choice, Disk Inventory, says something in similar ratio though different figures, to wit, CApaciry 1,12.2 GB caoacutym 88.7 GB used, Free 12.5 GB

Steve Herrod :

does the caoacutym mean anything to you?

Customer:

OW to bring up info on USER folder?

Steve Herrod :

if you double click on the folder

Steve Herrod :

it should then show each folder within it

Steve Herrod :

and then how much space they are using?

Customer:

O! it shows: 35.9 Library, 19.5 DropBox, 18.0 DOcuments, 5.3 Desktop, 2.4 Pictures, 2.3 Music (all in GB)

Customer:

Then, for MBs: 566.7 MB in Downloads, 101.5 in DropBox (Why Again?),

Steve Herrod :

ok - so Documents, Desktop, Pictures & Music

Steve Herrod :

should make sense

Steve Herrod :

and Downloads

Steve Herrod :

are there two Dropbox folders listed then?

Customer:

now for KBs 163.8 Movies, 16.4 .DS Store (What's that?), 4.1 kb .CFUserText Encoding, 4.1 KB .cups, 0 for .Trash, and 0 for Public

Steve Herrod :

ok, .DS Store is a folder used for caching picture files

Steve Herrod :

anything with a . before the folder is system related somehow

Customer:

What's LIBRARY? DOn't know how to empty that

Customer:

can't find it

Steve Herrod :

if you double click Library what's inside it?

Customer:

WHy are there two Drop Boxes?

Customer:

shall I delete one? WHere do I find the Dropbox(es)?

Steve Herrod :

two dropboxes doesn't make much sense - am guessing you only have one dropbox account?

Customer:

lemme see... OMG all strangers to me....34.2 GB apps support

Steve Herrod :

ok - so they are all files relating to installed applicaitons

Steve Herrod :

things like fonts would be stored there

Customer:

957.1 iTUnes, 653.5 MB CAches (What's Chache?), 29.3 Preferences, 10.5 COntainers (What's that?), 4.4 MB Mail, 4.5 MB Calendatrs, 3.9 MB Logs, 1.2MB Printers, then KB> Game Kit (How to GET RID OF GAME KIT??), 589.9KB Saved apps (again?)

Steve Herrod :

if Game Kit is KB (kilobytes) it won't make much difference

Customer:

Then, getting smaller, dctionaries, mobile documents (What's that?), messages, PubSub ,keychains, accounts, icons, Safari, cookies, etc...

Steve Herrod :

I think the folders to look at will be the two dropbox locations

Customer:

There are many apps. But Im an art historian and use only MS Word, MS PowerPOInt, gMail, , Preview, Skype, ...DOn't dare delete things like cyberDuck etc...

Customer:

lemme see, Under Downloads there is ONE: Dropbocx 1.6.4 .dmg worth 24.2 MB

Customer:

Where could the others be?

Steve Herrod :

ok - that is the installation file for Dropbox

Customer:

where did the TWO we saw, come from?

Steve Herrod :

that was under the User folder

Customer:

Oh, for one, there's a DropBox icon on top right, and I have Set Preferences for it to sync VERY FEW things with MB Air...

Steve Herrod :

ok

Customer:

39.8 MB DropBox in APPs

Steve Herrod :

that's the installed application itself

Customer:

the other one? the two had shown different sizes... ad not so small

Customer:

SOooo. in APPs there is only ONE Dropbox thingie...

Customer:

I have only ONE DB account, yes indeed

Steve Herrod :

ok - so if you open up Macintosh HD

Steve Herrod :

and then open up the Users folder

Customer:

Oh, Steve, the DropBox itself has 19.5 GBm the next one (under LIBRARY), is 101.5 MB and called .dropbox (same place, and must be the app...)

Steve Herrod :

ok - if you open up the 19.5GB dropbox folder

Steve Herrod :

what's in there?

Customer:

WOw. Clicking on Dropbox (the 19.5 GB one), I get a slew of things: COntent of the DB of course, U'll rattle off the sizes;

Customer:

8GB: 8.3, 5.1, 2.6, 1.5

Steve Herrod :

ok - is that all stuff you need in Dropbox?

Customer:

then MB: 957.5, 457.5, 255.2, 179.2, 63.7, 36.3, 30.4, 7.5, 6.8, 5.2, 4.1, 2.8,, 2.3, 1.6, 1.2, 1.1

Customer:

Well stuff I need to be able to access when I visit the kids in New YOrk (I'm in Taiwan)

Customer:

But don't know how to get into iCloud or to see - let alone download-, files from iCloud... :((

Steve Herrod :

ok - so Dropbox sounds like it's got needed files etc in

Customer:

Maybe I should learn how to use iCloud? I'm paying them fees...

Customer:

Steve may I go to eat before it gets cold out there (friends have cooked for eating outside... ut it's getting very cold there)

Steve Herrod :

of course - go and eat and we can catch up later. I should as well!

Steve Herrod :

ok to catch up in 90 minutes or so?

Steve Herrod :

will send some details on viewing iCloud content

Customer:

I brought the food in :))

Customer:

ok I see you've gone off to eat as well. Ok 90 mins then. Thanks

Steve Herrod :

ah :)

Customer:

well, Steve? Wanna take a break or work w food in hand...?

Customer:

for MBs there's 751.6 MB

Customer:

OK for BG I have a total of 83.4 used

Customer:

That makes up to about 84~85 GB. How much does this ccomputer hold? Why is there only 13.GB life and I'm warned the HD is full and I can't go on...

Customer:

OK Steve, I

Customer:

Hi Steve, I'm back online, working on the iMac so I don't lose your page. Please help me find how to free the space here... on the MBAir... Thanks.

Steve Herrod :

Thanks

Steve Herrod :

sorry - had to sort out food here for daughter as well

Steve Herrod :

from the looks of things the Macbook Air has abour 120GB maximum capacity

Customer:

So.....what must we do?

Customer:

Do you see anything unnecessary here?

Steve Herrod :

nothing particularly unnecessary

Steve Herrod :

and 13GB+ is still a sizeable amount of free space

Customer:

and, can you tell me how to put the less urgent items into iCLoud from here in Taiwan, and how to download them from Bardonia next week?

Steve Herrod :

ok

Steve Herrod :

iCloud works at the application level - so individual programs can access the content

Steve Herrod :

but we can get to it via the Finder

Steve Herrod :

and move things in that manner

Steve Herrod :

if you do this:

Steve Herrod :

To access your user library, select it from the Finder's Go menu (hold the Option key down to reveal the Library if needed). In the library, open the Mobile Documents directory

Steve Herrod :

that should then be your iCloud folder

Customer:

O Steve, no LIbrary under the FIner/Option

Customer:

SORRY - FOUND IT. Is THAT the iCLoud?

Steve Herrod :

in the Library folder

Steve Herrod :

should be a Mobile Documents folder

Customer:

It has things I don't know:Sgtranger: Caches, Calendars, Color Pickers COlors COmpositions COntainers COokies Dictionaries --- QWHERE are y FILES?

Customer:

my documents and photos?

Customer:

OMG, no photos and no documents. But I'm an art historian and work with photos and documents...

Steve Herrod :

icloud stores things usually in application specific folders

Steve Herrod :

so if you use Pages for example

Steve Herrod :

there should be a com-apple-pages folder in Mobile Documents

Steve Herrod :

which contains files etc

Steve Herrod :

what programs do you usually work in?

Customer:

Steve - PayPal says I have just PAID the $26 that JustAnswer says to pay AFTER I am 100% satisfied and AFTER my first TTrial Week ends on ther 24 December.... What to do?

Steve Herrod :

I would have to check that with Customer Services but the payment is usually taken as a deposit which is then refunded if you are not satisfied

Steve Herrod :

I'm guessing that is what has happened

Customer:

Found MOBILE DOcs. But NONE of my files are in there since I work in MS Word and MS PowerPoint under the Mac Parallels thing (that takes up many GB of space!) Taiwan uses mostly PCs and I must convert to Microsoft files. What to do now?

Steve Herrod :

ok - then it sounds like the files will be held in the Parallels storage location

Customer:

But there is no Parallel section in iCloud...?

Steve Herrod :

no, Parallels will store directly on the hard drive and not in the iCloud location

Steve Herrod :

just checking on my system here which folder it uses

Customer:

Well, on the HD I store both WORD and PPT files under folders close to each other when both a presentation and a paper are involved - all under a folder called Academic where I put folders from different conferences.

Steve Herrod :

ok

Customer:

So to save space must I convert everything to Mac softweare and uload them to iCloud, then. think you?

Steve Herrod :

no, I wouldn't go down that route to be honest if Parallels is working well and that helps with being in Taiwan

Steve Herrod :

just working out the best solution

Customer:

Each (huge) ppt file, must then be first converted to Keynote before storing? And after downloading in New York reconverted back into PPT format for uses elsewhere---Or travel about gving presentations out of the MBAir direct?

Customer:

In any case, it seems that for someone working with huge photo files (or like my students working with documentary films) they must carry huge exgternal HDRIVES?

Steve Herrod :

it is one of the few drawbacks of systems like the Macbook air

Steve Herrod :

they have smaller drives than other laptops

Steve Herrod :

but that is one of the reasons why they are so portable

Steve Herrod :

most of the organizations that use them do end up using external drives in some way

Customer:

Hahaha, they require me to carry another machine though, an external hard drive...

Customer:

i see... :(

Steve Herrod :

it might be worth uninstalling any applications that you don't use

Steve Herrod :

if that is an option

Steve Herrod :

also, a utility like this can help

Customer:

So, I guess there is no way we can increase the space on MBAir and stop it from repeating "your Startup Disk is full..."?

Steve Herrod :

as it can remove old cache/system files

Steve Herrod :

one way would be to upgrade the hard drive to a larger capacity model

Steve Herrod :

but that would involve reinstalling etc

Customer:

is this MBAir able to hld a larger drive? I thought I'd bought the largest available one, last year...

Steve Herrod :

yes, I think it can take a 250GB model now

Steve Herrod :

just checking

Steve Herrod :

it does look like 240GB and 480GB are available

Steve Herrod :

but to access and replace the hard drive is a little fiddly

Steve Herrod :

something like this would probably be more economic and not too bulky

Steve Herrod :

http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=880

Customer:

I see, when it comes to external HDs Doesn't the Mac come with at least a TB HD?

Steve Herrod :

it does have a TB port

Steve Herrod :

but I would go with a USB one just in case you ever need to connect to a different system

Customer:

TBport? I meant a One-Terrabyte exgternal HD...?

Customer:

btw am fiddling with your last link and got into MacCLeaner ane Defrag and MacKeeper/.... WHICH one did you mean, Stege?

Steve Herrod :

oh ok - sorry thought you were referring to the Thunderbolt Port that Macs now have

Steve Herrod :

MacCleanrer I think was the one

Steve Herrod :

you could get a TB (terabyte) external HD

Steve Herrod :

but the link I sent was for a slimline model to keep size down

Steve Herrod :

the slightly larger models go up to 2TB

Customer:

O WONDERFUL! I dfownloaded SpeedUpMac and it's now cleaning the MBAir, cutting files that (I would know) were redundant...

Steve Herrod :

sounds good

Customer:

And what is the Thunferbolt thingie ?

Steve Herrod :

Thunderbolt is a new port devised by Apple

Steve Herrod :

faster than USB

Customer:

FunkFiles Size reaching already 2.5 GB!

Steve Herrod :

but only Apple systems have them

Steve Herrod :

:)

Steve Herrod :

one thing I wanted to ask was where you backup your files too at the moment?

Customer:

Wowwhat is Cache ? there were 1.13GB in cache files...

Steve Herrod :

cache files are files the system uses to remember things - such as web pages

Steve Herrod :

but over time they get outdated and take up space

Customer:

I have a 2TB server tyhat is rapidly getting full. THere I have little external back uyp HDs,

Customer:

Well, it won't reduce my files unless I buy the software.... am arranging for billing....

Steve Herrod :

ok - hopefully it's not too pricey

Steve Herrod :

just wanted to check there were some backups :)

Customer:

US$29. But hopefully it's a once-for-all payment

Steve Herrod :

yes it looks like it

Customer:

Steve a dialogue box shows the McAir HD, then a Spare 1 (81.4 GB free -18.3 BG used. then a Spare2 with 99.5frerr and 203.2 used; then a spare3 with 13.9 free and 84.3 Used.-- What are those spare HDs? Culd this mean the Toshiba external drive that's hooked up (and divided into Time Machine and Data, then the iPhone?

Steve Herrod :

yes - that sounds like it is referring to each of those devices

Customer:

Steve, THey did not gibve me s KEY or REgistration Number, even though I have paid already - to do the unnedded file-reduction with SpeedUpMac

Steve Herrod :

hmmm, have they sent an e-mail or anything at all?

Customer:

Oh, they are called element 5, and have replied... Lemme see

Steve Herrod :

ok

Customer:

Thanks Steve I think you've lead through many mazes today. Finally How do set up so I can see the "path" of a file or folder? There used to be a line at the bottom of any folder showing the subfolder and folder and drive etc. Those hae disappeared and I no longer know where any fild or folder comes from

Steve Herrod :

ah yes - it's hidden in Mountain Lion

Steve Herrod :

can be turned back on again

Steve Herrod :

should be a View > Show Status Bar.

Customer:

how?

Steve Herrod :

option when you are in a Finder window

Customer:

yes?

Customer:

press Option Key when Finder window is on?

Steve Herrod :

when you have the Finder window

Steve Herrod :

go to the view menu

Steve Herrod :

and choose Show Status Bar

Steve Herrod :

Let me know if that shows what is needed

Customer:

Yes it does. Thanks so much... I'm now following the clues given by the German software company...

Customer:

the STeller SPeed up thingie

Steve Herrod :

ah - hopefully there is something in the e-mail to get the full version working

Customer:

Well, managed to input the KEY, finally and yet another viersion came to be unpacked and to scan etc.

Steve Herrod :

ah

Customer:

Hope this time the nearly 7GB will be erased... (^_^)

Steve Herrod :

:)

Customer:

Thanks Steve. You must be very tire at this hour - where are you?

Customer:

in the US?

Steve Herrod :

I'm in UK

Steve Herrod :

and you're welcome

Customer:

Ah then, it's still late afternoon for you. I don't feel that bad then.....Listening to the broadcast from the shooting in Connecticut... I guess you msut have been terribly horrified like my daughter who is mum of two 20 miles from the School...Take care...

Steve Herrod :

yes - was awful

Customer:

I gave the reg key no. got an instant OK but that OK simply glows and dims - but no action to clean up the many large files with an X before them (X meaning if you don't pay we won't sweep...)

Customer:

Steve it is a Merry-go-round. In this loop I am asked to give the Key No. and then the OK comes on, and then nothing happens, and thenn the circle begins again... Alas, must ask again, what now?

Steve Herrod :

ok - just checking

Customer:

Oh, I see icons across the top of SpeedUp Mac, and I clicked the runing mannie "CLean UP" and something is happening...

Customer:

I think I'm OK for this day.....

Customer:

O-Oh, it cleaned up 2.6 Gigabytes when the scan showed nearly 7 GB of Junk...

Steve Herrod :

ah ok

Steve Herrod :

it might be worth re-running after a restart as well to see if anything changes then

Steve Herrod :

although it sounds like it has located something

Customer:

I started it going on a SCAN again... It's gathering junk files again...

Steve Herrod :

ok

Customer:

will try

Customer:

Hmmmm it won't quit for restart...

Steve Herrod :

is it still scanning?

Customer:

will restart now. I managed to stop it. more anon

Steve Herrod :

ok

Customer:

Yes I found it. Thanks.

Customer:

am restarting

Steve Herrod :

ok

Steve Herrod :

will have to do school pickup shortly so hopefully there will be a bit more space available now

Customer:

There is, thank you dear XXXXX, MANY THANKS! PLEASE be careful on the road.

Steve Herrod :
