Customer Question

I have a 3GS i-Phone which I regularly synch to my laptop (have latest upgrade) - my husaand also has same model that he hasn't synched for what seems like ages! (version 3.1.3) because he tis in rashed the laptop he set it up on a few years ago. I want to synch his stuff on it as he is a band and has numerous music downloads installed (plus apps etc) but need help doing this as I'm worried it'll affect mine. He had i-pad which he sync's to i-cloud, but his version is sooo old on i-phone - I can't even find the option - suggestions welcome?!? xx

MacTechTrainer :

Hello and thank you for asking your question, with JustAnswer.com/Mac. I am Sr. Mac Tech Support Specialist, Terry, glad to assist you.

MacTechTrainer :

Thank you for your inquiry

Customer :

Hi Terry,

MacTechTrainer :

Hello!

MacTechTrainer :

As a professional Mac technician, I like to take more of a personable, personal approach, toward helping any valued JustAnswer.com customers, I am fortunate to assist.

MacTechTrainer :

On that note, may I start by asking your first name?

Customer :

So r u gonna help?

Customer :

I hope so 4 £35 quid!

MacTechTrainer :

I will definitely be assisting you:)

MacTechTrainer :

may I have your first name?

MacTechTrainer :

I like to have the first name of the customers I help

MacTechTrainer :

this way I won

MacTechTrainer :

will not see you rather

MacTechTrainer :

as "JACUSTOMER"

MacTechTrainer :

;)

Customer :

Sorry - my name is Stacey

MacTechTrainer :

No worries and greetings to you Stacey- I will work diligently to assist you

MacTechTrainer :

So going forward -- am I to understand that you are seeking to find out how to sync your husband's iPhone 3GS on the same iTunes application on the same laptop you use your iPhone 3GS on?

Customer :

U sound so formal! anyway! I promise I'm not a bimbo - just dont want 2 wipe my stuff!

MacTechTrainer :

lol

MacTechTrainer :

just polite, but all tech, all professional

MacTechTrainer :

be yourself though! That is what I like- when folks are themselves

MacTechTrainer :

(and no, you will not be a "bimbo"- not on my watch ;)

Customer :

I have i-phone 3gs set up very happily on my laptop - all updated. Hubby set his up about 2 years ago on his old laptop that he gave 2 his mum - he hasn't updated it since because I'm worried by pluggin his into mine, he will potentially wipe what I have - how do I get him backed-up and updated on my laptop without disturbing what I have in place without issue?

MacTechTrainer :

And you are 100% correct for being cautious about this Stacey

MacTechTrainer :

iTunes can work with multiple devices on one one user account

MacTechTrainer :

BUT

MacTechTrainer :

all of the devices that sync with that library

MacTechTrainer :

will all have the same data

MacTechTrainer :

and any new data that is not already in that iTunes library will be wiped and replaced with the contents of that iTunes library

MacTechTrainer :

so I am glad you came to us about this

MacTechTrainer :

You would have to create a new user on that laptop

MacTechTrainer :

so your husband can use his iPhone 3GS on that iTunes library set up under his account on the laptop

MacTechTrainer :

not yours

Customer :

I already messed up a sync on first purchase of phone and lost 30 albums that I bought on my i-phone! - didn't transfer purchases on i-phone b4 synching & synched bk - lost albums! (well didn't but 2 hard 2 try 2 restore! - didn't Bak up!

MacTechTrainer :

and you mentioned he is in a band

MacTechTrainer :

so that is very important

MacTechTrainer :

Oh no back up?

MacTechTrainer :

You must always back up

MacTechTrainer :

that is so important

MacTechTrainer :

because iTunes each time you synchronize that data from your iPhone 3GS with that iTunes application

Customer :

gonna start backin up 2 i-cloud! was v annoyed! @ myself not apple!

MacTechTrainer :

iTunes will make a back up each time you sycn

MacTechTrainer :

"sync"

Customer :

but it's not I'm not that bad @ tekkie stuff 4 an average joe and I still messed up! apple prob need 2 b bit more pro-active bout explaining what can go wrong

Customer :

everything is sooo vague - hence me comin 2 u! not every1 can afford 2 pay 4 this!

MacTechTrainer :

No worries - what I can recommend however are some options to help you and your hubby

MacTechTrainer :

with making sure you do not lose any data

Customer :

I have 2 ask - where r u based - coz our company outsource and we get gr8 service outside UK and not 2 b rude, I don't think u UK but u r very cool!

Customer :

wot is ur name?

Customer :

I know it's not MacTechTrainer! lol!

MacTechTrainer :

Terry, Sr. Mac Support Specialist, at your service Stacey!

MacTechTrainer :

I am actually a professional Mac Tutor as well as a Mac tech

MacTechTrainer :

that is where it comes from :)

Customer :

Soz u did tell me that! so Terry - what can we do?

MacTechTrainer :

And thanks for the compliement

Customer :

welcome

MacTechTrainer :

I want to visit the UK with my wife one day:)

MacTechTrainer :

So here is what I have

MacTechTrainer :

I was checking my Tech resources for you Stacey

Customer :

I think it'd b diff than what u think - where r u based?

MacTechTrainer :

and I was about to type out some steps for you - but I forgot about this great guide I had from Apple

MacTechTrainer :

(California USA)

MacTechTrainer :

;)

Customer :

I'm not getting charged per min am i

MacTechTrainer :

Not at all

MacTechTrainer :

in fact you have only placed a deposit on this question Stacey, which I might add is refundable, if not satisfied

MacTechTrainer :

so you have nothing to worry about there:)

Customer :

I'm not good with guides?!? can i do it whilst ur online with me?

Customer :

got burnt b4!!

MacTechTrainer :

The only time a payment is made is if you are pleased with the results and Accept any of my answers

MacTechTrainer :

And not to worry

MacTechTrainer :

I don't provide guides, unless I am still there with you

MacTechTrainer :

so again no worries

MacTechTrainer :

So here is what I want you to review

Customer :

Not bov bout the £35 - accepted that was a given but didn't read the script prop & worried I was paying £35 as depo & then some crazy per min charge! that's wot u get in UK normally!

MacTechTrainer :

Oh no

MacTechTrainer :

we would not be so successful for nearly the last 9+ years if we charged by the hour

MacTechTrainer :

lol

MacTechTrainer :

I wouldn't do it out of pure conscious

Customer :

b4 we get 2 biz - wot time in Cali? & where u from in Cali?

MacTechTrainer :

because I don't like charging by the min type of services

Customer :

:O)

MacTechTrainer :

Northern California- State capitol- Sacramento

MacTechTrainer :

long time

MacTechTrainer :

over 25 years

Customer :

bet u glad u w coast not e coast @ min huh?!?

MacTechTrainer :

Love my home ;)

MacTechTrainer :

Feel for those (very much ) on the east coast

MacTechTrainer :

do me a favor Stacey and check out this link for me

MacTechTrainer :

I want to make sure it can help you and your husband

Customer :

can i open in sep pop up?

MacTechTrainer :

Not meaning to interrupt your flow of questions- love em' - just want to make sure I am still helping you at the same time

MacTechTrainer :

You sure can

MacTechTrainer :

are you using Firefox or Safari?

Customer :

wot time there by the way? Can't remember from last yr - r u 7 hrs behind GMT?

Customer :

Explorer - on Laptop @ min - gonna plug it in

MacTechTrainer :

It is currently 8:24 PM (Pacific Standard Time)

MacTechTrainer :

ok

Customer :

JUst opening now - u miust b clocking off soon? it's 3:20AM here!!!!

Customer :

page open

MacTechTrainer :

Oh no worries I will be here for at least another hour or so

Customer :

Which section do u rec reading? I know how 2 set up play lists etc but I feel I need to set up a sep i-Tunes lib all together if poss?!?

MacTechTrainer :

Good question

MacTechTrainer :

I think Method Three is a good place to start

Customer :

I v nervous - coz I know friends that have tried 2 do same as me & wiped theirs by trying 2 set up 2nd account! - I love apple - but they do make things bloody complicated!!

MacTechTrainer :

lol

MacTechTrainer :

that is why I am here

MacTechTrainer :

and please, at any given time, you can stop and ask me a question

Customer :

We have 2 i-phones, a touch and an i-pad and each one synchs somewhere diff - it's madness really!

MacTechTrainer :

I want you to be as clear and comfortable as possible in these processes Stacey

MacTechTrainer :

I know what you mean

MacTechTrainer :

I wish it was easier - and I am sure it will be over time

MacTechTrainer :

but right now, that is not so much the case, so I will be here to simplify this as well as I can

MacTechTrainer :

the reason why I suggested Method Three

MacTechTrainer :

is because it will allow you and your hubby to share the same iTunes but use different libraries

MacTechTrainer :

so you can switch between libraries

Customer :

OK - so - I'm gonna start @ step 3 - coz I agree that it's the closest match - if this all goes a bit pete tong - can it be sorted or do I have 2 explain 2 hubby that i was tryin 2 drag him into 21C and lost all his music? - I'm sooo nervous about this! x

MacTechTrainer :

and that means you should name his iTunes library differently

MacTechTrainer :

lol

MacTechTrainer :

That is ok

MacTechTrainer :

I am here and watching for anytime you yell (or type loud) Terry!

MacTechTrainer :

lol

MacTechTrainer :

So I can answer you faset

MacTechTrainer :

"fast"

Customer :

MY i-phone is lizard and his isn't so will that help set uip diff libs?

MacTechTrainer :

when you say "lizard" Stacey, are you referring to the name of your iTunes library or your iPhone?

Customer :

it comes up as lizard's i-phone when synch

Customer :

so ass i-phone

Customer :

that's assume not ass!

MacTechTrainer :

lol

MacTechTrainer :

I understand

MacTechTrainer :

So to answer your question

MacTechTrainer :

when the 2nd library is set up for your husband's iPhone 3GS, it will identify his iPhone's name

MacTechTrainer :

just take your time

MacTechTrainer :

Sure

Customer :

OK so shall I startv folloing the instrtns u sent now? Actually I'm gonna

MacTechTrainer :

and if unsure about any step

MacTechTrainer :

Stop and let me know

MacTechTrainer :

Believe me, Apple does not provide these steps to make its users lose their precious data

MacTechTrainer :

and with me tagging along, it should go ok without any headaches

Customer :

it says if i-Tunes is open, quit it - & when I hold Shift when opening i-Tunes it just highlights everything on my desktop as I expected??? This is where i know the instructions r not clear! goin g 4 fag - b bak in 2! xx

MacTechTrainer :

Ok

MacTechTrainer :

no worries

Customer :

bak!

Customer :

sorry 2 hold u up

MacTechTrainer :

No problem at all

MacTechTrainer :

One moment Stacey, I am checking out that section you are talking about now

Customer :

coolio

Customer :

i wish our tech support @ work was like u!

Customer :

it's step1 - windows users

MacTechTrainer :

Awww- thanks Stacey

MacTechTrainer :

I have a windows PC I am on now

MacTechTrainer :

here is what you do

Customer :

welcome

MacTechTrainer :

this is the box you need to see when you hold down the Shift key and click to Open iTunes:

Customer :

not geting that - just getting ur notes?!?

MacTechTrainer :

Hold on

MacTechTrainer :

getting the photo of what I am talking about

MacTechTrainer :

sorry about the delay

MacTechTrainer :

Click the link below the image

MacTechTrainer :

and it will enlarge it for you

Customer :

no probs - i've got the smallest chat window!

MacTechTrainer :

when you hold that Shift Key down on your keyboard Stacey

MacTechTrainer :

then click and open iTuns

MacTechTrainer :

"iTunes"

MacTechTrainer :

and you will see that little box

MacTechTrainer :

which is what you want to see in order to switch between iTunes libraries]

Customer :

can't c the box ur talking bout but gonn atry no

MacTechTrainer :

One me to add to this page again so you can see it?

Customer :

lemme try now

Customer :

no when i hold shift & try 2 clic the i-tunes icon it jus highlights all on desktop like stndard Fn

Customer :

sorry!!

Customer :

can u remote connect 2 me @ all?

MacTechTrainer :

Yes, I know exactly what you are talking about

MacTechTrainer :

don't let all that highlight fool you

MacTechTrainer :

if you have to click on iTunes a few times do it

MacTechTrainer :

and eventually that small window will show up

MacTechTrainer :

I got the same view too Stacey

MacTechTrainer :

and it threw me off for a second:)

Customer :

when i hold shift - l or r clic?

MacTechTrainer :

Shift only

MacTechTrainer :

then Click a couple times on the iTunes icon on your desktop

Customer :

OK then I get a very minimal menu?

MacTechTrainer :

Correct

MacTechTrainer :

It should say something to the effect of "Choose iTunes Library"

Customer :

shall I tell u what I get because it looks windows based not i-tunes based?!?

Customer :

I get windows based options when I r click and 'confirm 'explore' action when i click l

Customer :

that was right click!

MacTechTrainer :

Actually you don't need to right click

MacTechTrainer :

Just click as you normally do with you mouse

Customer :

give me min - i accidentally clicked the itunes icon - gotta wait 2 shut it down again.

MacTechTrainer :

No problems

MacTechTrainer :

take your time

MacTechTrainer :

I am patient :)

Customer :

I just held shift and double left clicked and it's just opened I-Tunes again?!?

MacTechTrainer :

Hmm

MacTechTrainer :

I am trying to figure why it is not working for you

MacTechTrainer :

Hold on, let me try on my side again

MacTechTrainer :

Ok Stacey

MacTechTrainer :

I know what you may be doing incorrectly

MacTechTrainer :

when you hold the Shift key down

MacTechTrainer :

do not release the Shift Key until you double click iTunes

MacTechTrainer :

and the iTunes dialog box appears

MacTechTrainer :

Still with me Stacey :)

MacTechTrainer :

Hello Stacey?

MacTechTrainer :

Your chat is going in and out

MacTechTrainer :

I don't want to lose you

Customer :

apolo - LT decided to have a restoring fit! I know I sound thick, but I'm quite savvy with computer stuff but this just isn't working - just wondering - should I connect his i-phone 2 my laptop? sounds stupid, but haven't done it because I thought it would wipe my account & set up new - but you've not got his i-phone - so I'm assuming that's not the issue?!? x

MacTechTrainer :

No not stupid at all

MacTechTrainer :

I think what you need to do is get his iPhone 3GS as well so I we can test this itunes library switch process more effectively

MacTechTrainer :

sorry this has been giving you trouble Stacey

MacTechTrainer :

But you know another way you can resolve this for your husband

MacTechTrainer :

is to make a new user account on your Windows PC

MacTechTrainer :

that way he can set up his iPhone 3GS on his own iTunes library in his own user account

MacTechTrainer :

how about setting that up instead?

Customer :

I've got his i-phone here?!?

MacTechTrainer :

You do?

Customer :

Yeah he left it here with me to sort out?!? good move - not so sure! lol!

MacTechTrainer :

lol

MacTechTrainer :

Now would you like me to help you set up a new user on your computer for your husband to use his iPhone 3GS?

Customer :

If that's going to be easier and won't affect my i-phone synch, set up and content then let's do that.

MacTechTrainer :

Ok

MacTechTrainer :

now tell me Stacey, what version of Windows are you running? Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7?

Customer :

Gonna b thick again how do I check? - sure not Vista

MacTechTrainer :

If not sure try this:

MacTechTrainer :

Click on Start then go to Control Panel

MacTechTrainer :

then go to System

MacTechTrainer :

It should tell you on that main page, what the version of Windows you have installed

MacTechTrainer :

Hi Stacey

MacTechTrainer :

I see you are hanging in here with me

MacTechTrainer :

but I know it is very late where you are

MacTechTrainer :

would you like to try this further tomorrow?

MacTechTrainer :

or later today for you rather?

Customer :

Thanks Terry, my Laptop is taking ages to do anything so lets leave it adn I'l; still mark u Excellent Service

MacTechTrainer :

Haa haa!

MacTechTrainer :

You are too sweet Stacey-

MacTechTrainer :

Accept or not, as long as you are communicating with me

MacTechTrainer :

this session will remain open

MacTechTrainer :

until I get your answer resolved

MacTechTrainer :

AND as long as you don't give up!

MacTechTrainer :

I believe I can help you get out of this pickle
